Just wondering what’s the purpose of adding 60-80g of dextrose to your post workout protein shake??? I’ve been reading this a lot but I have not clue why it is done, does it have any benefits, it’s gotta have something to do with the insulin spike no?
can someone please explain this to me I appreciate it.
Also what kind of a carbs can I mix in with my protein for post workout shake?
^ what james said. It will carry the protein to the muscles and it will replensih the glycogen stores that you depleted during your workout which will start the recovery process. Also, becaose those forms of carbs are very fast absorbing, then get the process going quickly. If you were to eat a low glycemic index carb (slow converting to sugar carb) like brown rice or something, it would take literally 3-5 hours before you glycogen stores were replenished and much nutrients were given to the muscle. With this type of post workout shake, you get these nutrients there in an hour or less depending on your metabolism. Typically, the gasctric emptying times of liquid foods is about 30 to 40 minutes which means it's past the stomach and in your intestine by then and that's where absorbtion takes place. If you eat whole food, the food could take 2-3 hours to digest enough to even start to enter the intestine. In a healthy working stomach, the food doesn't leave the stomach until it is broken down enough to be absorbed by the intestine. This of course is different for each person because we all have different levels of digestive enzymes and stuff like that.
