  • help for my dad

ok, here's the story. my dad has emphysema. he's always been small and lean. at his best 5'8 @ 135lbs. he's been down too 118-119 for awhile (about 5yrs)...so, he's been in the hospital with namonia 2x's in the last 3yr's. he went to the doctor (goes pretty often) about 2mo's ago and he was 111lb's. the doctor suggested to try some weight gainer (like i've been saying for about 3yrs!!). my mom goes to gnc and the "expert nutritionist" there suggested (ready?) gnc mega-whatever-1850! so, my mom get's that. he goes to the doctor today...he's 105!!!! holyshit! only my oldman can drink gnc mega crap and NOT gain anything!!! well, he hasnt been drinking it (duh). it too thick! i suggested he try's bsn true mass, but the cost is too much on a fixed budget. any suggestion's?? need as much calorie's as poss. in a thin concistancy. not too concerned about taste (the man chews asprin before he swallows)...just cost and calorie count. need to get some weight on him...

Got to be Optimum Nutritions Serious Mass $28.99 for 12lbs at dpsnutrition.com. Can i ask what his emphysema was caused by? If his resistance is down i would also suggest Echinacea it is an herb in capsule you can get very cheap. I would also implement honey a couple tablespoons a day will help to put some weight on and has alot of natural nutrients in it. I would also get him some Flax oil caps for the joints and will help with the mitochondria dna cells in the brain. All of this stuff is pretty cheap to get. Here is the nutritional list for the Serious Mass:

Oh, i forgot. If he has any probs with his stomach, like he cant hold things down or is tempermental it is prob best not to use the Echinacea, cause some ppl have probs with it especially if they have an ulcer or something. I take it ed, but it doesn't bother me. If it is not an option he can always try Goldenseal instead. It is also an herb.

Sorry to hear that daved. Wouldn't you want the cleanest source with the maximum calorie and protien if he's sick? I'd recommend isopure if that's the case.

If you want to add more fat to it, add some nat pnut butter, or whatever pnut butter is cheaper, also get some good clean meals in, and dont forget at least 3 serving of fresh produce, the darker green the better. I have resorted to the powdered greens that you desolve in water to get my servings, cause i know im lacking in getting enough. You can get it at most supplement or healthfood stores.

I was going to suggest milk and peanut butter as a base for a protein shake. Lots of calories and wholesome to boot. Additionally, he could add in additional calories from various oils (flax, hemp, olive, etc...).

this may sound odd, but if he's wasting slowly, sounds like he'd be a good candidate for HRT , low test, gh etc. jump up those RBCs and protein synthesis. Just an idea

I was kinda thinking that as well, but sometimes older folks can be stubborn about shots and stuff like that, lol!

my mom is a skinny person too.. and was a heavy smoker for many many years..she still smokes but moderate rate..she also gains weight very slowly.. she is around 5'5 - 5'6 about 101lbs.. but she used to be under 95lbs which was scary.. she's been on the gnc weight gainer for a while now.. it improved her apetite too.. she feels and looks better.. for her weight she did gain some decent size and you can tell the way clothes fit her better.

Tell your dad he needs to eat and drink this stuff no matter what..its either this or god forbid 6 feet under..thats what the doc told my mom.

his illness is from smoking...he's quit smoking, but too late. he was shot in the military, so he has problems swallowing. he builds scar tissue on his esaughagus (sp?) and has to have it scraped to remove about every 3 mo's. his lung operate at about 90%. he has a hard time swallowing, so he get's full off very little food. a drink has to be of thin consistancy, and it's the only way to go. i will talk to him about hrt, but i doubt he'll go that route. his white blood cell count was at 1950 (whatever that means) yesturday, so the doc. hit him with antibiotics. it's at 1450 this morning, so they hit him again. he's just not into eating!! i gotta find something thin. i gave him some bsn truemass, he really liked it, but it too costly for them..i appreciate your help guy's...

Hmm,...I was once a victim of wasting. as soon as I got off of six weeks ICU, I would eat two breakfasts, snacks, lunch, snacks, dinner and snacks again. then when I got home I just got to smoking my bud and ate allday. I ate whatever, but I didn't eat junk.
