  • Protein supplements & Bowel Movements

Dude, do you guys get the shits as bad as I do when eating high protein meal and using Protein bars and shakes daily when you don't have time for a meal? I have to go to the bathroom like once every two hours. That gets really annoying and doesn't feel very good after a while either if you know what I mean. So is there something you guys take to help this out? Or do you just cut down on the supplements and eat more real food? Or is there a certain type of food that is better to eat while taking protein supplements to help out the digestion of the high protein meals and supplements? Thanks guys,

    JS

Are you lactose intollarant?? Iam saying this because i used to use protein supplements with milk, even skim milk and i used to have all sorts of probs. Now i use about 1/4 rice milk and the balance water and i have no effects. You might want to try it. I use Ricedream rice milk. It is great with cereal too.

I know the feeling bro! You should get used to it after a while. Once your body is adjusted you'll only go about 3 times a day!!! lol!!!

Also you might want to try taking some protein digestive enzymes.

Alright, thanks guys. It's not so so bad anymore. And when I use it with milk, I usually use Soymilk or something similar. Besides that, even just eating a lot of tuna or something like that will do the same. Just high protein in general screws with my stomach. But anyway, like you said, I'll get used to it. And it is getting better, plus trying to eat more solid food and vegetable I think helps alot. Thanks again.

Try some digestive enzymes such as ginger root or papya root. Take a serving 3x per day

Exactly, I mix mine with Soymilk

Also might want to consider Lactose Free Whey

Actually, some ppl with finicky stomachs can have adverse reactions to Soymilk as well, because soy is a bean, lol!

It will settle down when your body gets used to it. But, to answer your question, whole foods will always be best for most meals because they digest and absorb slower. The gastric emptying times of shakes are so much faster because the protein is usually already broken down into di and tripeptides. That is the only form the intestines can absorb it in. Therefore, digestion is much faster. This means you have a really high protein level and then low soon after. It's always best to follow a shake with whole food about 30-45 minutes later. That way, by the time the protein from the shake is gone the protein from the whole food is ready to be used (or close behind). Supplemental protein absorbs so quickly, unless it's the slow absorbing kind (casein), that you really only want to use it first thing in the morning and post training. Any other time you should rely on whole food when possible.

papaya enzymes, acidophiluss, bromelain, basic multivitamin, lipase, pepzin. Your body can only digest 50 grams of protein every 3 hours so stick to whey and isolates during the day and save the caseins for nightime.

Great advice here. If you're actually getting the runs, that's bad. It means you've exhausted your supply of good bacteria in your intestines that help break down food, and you're not getting the most out of what you eat. So replace them with acidophilus or probiotic caps, or even yogurt if you don't have your supplements around. Yogurt has acidophilus and other live cultures in it that will help. Whey by itself - only morning and post-w/o, and don't go above 40-50g at first. Less is more until your body gets used to it, if you have the runs you're just wasting $ on protein. When it's appropriate, slow absorption down by making smoothies and adding yogurt, flax meal, olive oil, peanut butter, or whatever you like to the mix. Shakes should be less than 50% of your protein intake - they're called supplements for a reason. Eat whole food, then supplement to take yourself over the top. If you have the runs, something's wrong. It's not "part of the territory".
