    Do you feel tired even though those consistent workouts are supposed to provide you with more energy? Low iron stores may be the culprit. Having low iron stores does not mean you are anemic but you could be one step away. An individual who has anemia does not have enough iron to produce red blood cells, which are essential in delivering oxygen to the body's tissues. Symptoms of low iron stores can include fatigue and decreased aerobic endurance.

    One study looked at the endurance level of 42 healthy women who had low iron stores but who were not anemic. The study focused at whether their iron status was negatively affecting them at the gym. Half of the women were given an iron supplement and the other half were given a placebo. They were put on a four-week exercise program where they rode a stationary bike five times a week for 30 minutes. The women who took a supplement raised their iron stores to normal and their energy levels increased as well.

    If you are a vegetarian you are more likely to be at risk for low iron stores and anemia because iron is more difficult to absorb from vegetables than from meat. Although red meat is considered one of the best sources of iron other good sources of iron include beans, dried fruits, soybeans, tofu, spinach, and other leafy green vegetables. In addition, taking vitamin C with iron will help the iron absorb better.

    If you are feeling unusually tired during and after workouts, first try eating more iron rich foods. If that does not help, ask your doctor for a serum ferritin blood test, which will measure your total iron. If your blood test shows you have low iron than an iron supplement may be needed but ONLY under the recommendation of a doctor.

        Most of the time this is more for women than men. Most (about 60-75%) men have high iron and high iron is bad for you. men that know they have high iron should give blood a few times a year. there are many studies on the benifits of giving blood for men and a few women.

        We all know giving blood helps others, but did you know donating blood is also a healthy habit for yourself? Before donating blood, everyone must pass a mini-physical and a medical history examination. During the physical, your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and your hematocrit level (the level of red cells in your blood) are checked. Sometimes physical problems such as high blood pressure are found during a blood donation mini-physical. So donating blood can be a way to keep a check on your own health while helping others. Preliminary studies also found that heart attacks and other cardiac problems were less common in men who had donated blood compared to men who had not. The two studies involved over 6,500 men and were conducted by the University of Kansas and the University of Kuopio in Finland. Researchers believe by giving blood, men -- and post-menopausal women -- rid their bodies of excessive iron, which is thought to contribute to heart disease.

        According to new research findings from Finland, donating blood may help to prevent heart attacks. The study, the first to suggest that blood donors may have a lower risk of heart attack, was published in The British Medical Journal on March 15. Researchers from the University of Kuopio in Finland conducted a large scale study involving 2,682 men between the ages of 42 and 60, who were participants in the Kuopio ischemic heart disease risk factor study.
        Over the 5.5 year period that was tracked, 153 of the participants donated blood. Researchers found that the blood donors had an 86% lower risk of heart attack than non-donors. Fewer than 1% (1) of the blood donors had an acute heart attack versus 9.8% (226) of the non-donors

          I think that many of us that are health concious could risk possibly not getting enough of it just because of the fact we are aware too much is bad.
          I had forgotten about making sure I am getting enough iron because I have always known that too much is bad for you- so getting enough became not a concern to me as making sure I didnt get too much. I know that many who are trying to eat extra clean eat primarily chicken and not much red meat (as I have done before as well) and at those times maybe arent getting enough iron.

            Im sure that is true for some. a lot of gyms will do blood work for you like iron, col and so on.

                good deal! and guys remeber if its been a while since you have been on, you can still give blood, for that matter anyone can give blood. just answer all the questions the way you need to to pass and then when they ask you to place that sticker on the blood that says yes use my blood or no dont ( choose not dont). it is private and know one knows till it gets to the lab and they see the sticker and destroy the blood!
