Large study evaluates the efficacy and safety of glucosamine and chondroitin in knee osteoarthritis
In a recent review of all randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials on oral glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate, researchers looked at the effectiveness of these supplements in knee osteoarthritis. The researchers used a number of evaluative tests, including: joint space narrowing, Lequesne Index (for pain), Western Ontario MacMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), visual analog scale for pain, mobility, safety, and response to treatment.
Good news for arthritis sufferers. The results showed that both supplements were effective and safe. If you suffer from pain from osteoarthritis, speak to your physician to see if either compound or a combined supplement is right for you. Typically, the recommendation is for a trial period of three to four months. If your symptoms do not improve, then do not continue to take the supplement/s.
