    Organic vs. Conventional Produce

Most shoppers believe organic produce is healthier than conventional, according to recent Boston University studies. Does that notion match the facts? Here is what experts say about key issues.

    Is Organic Produce Safer?
Conventional: Stringent federal regulations make it unlikely that conventional produce, such as apples, harbor harmful pesticide levels by the time they reach consumers. The untreated manure used in organic agriculture contains harmful bacteria (E. coli, for example) that could pose more of a safety threat than conventional produce.

Organic: Pesticide levels may not be high on conventional produce but their use damages the environment. Most pesticides miss their targets and are dispersed throughout the environment. Conventional farmers actually use more manure than organic farmers.

Conclusion: At this time, there is no research available to make a clear case that an organic peach or pear or apple is safer than a conventional one. And the USDA says its organic seal is simply confirmation of a method of production, not a safety endorsement.

    Does Organic Produce Taste Better?
Conventional: If you did a blind taste test, people would not be able to tell the difference between an organic apple and a conventional one. Taste is due to chemicals. And the chemical composition of an organic apple and a conventionally grown apple are identical.

Organic: Most reports of a flavor advantage for organic are anecdotal. Some insist flavor is enhanced in organic produce.

Conclusion: Taste is subjective. But there is a distinct flavor advantage when produce - conventional or organic - is freshly picked.

    Is Organic Produce More Nutritious?
Conventional: Plants have genetic codes that determine much of their nutrient profile. If you analyzed the two in a lab, you most likely would not be able to tell the difference.

Organic: A handful of controversial studies suggests organic produce may contain more of certain nutrients. But even organic experts admit there are too many factors that influence plant growth to make a case for added nutrition.

Conclusion: Many organic advocates feel that trying to identify a nutritional difference between the two types of produce is fruitless.
Disclaimer: Steroid use is illegal in a vast number of countries around the world. This is not without reason. Steroids should only be used when prescribed by your doctor and under close supervision. Steroid use is not to be taken lightly and we do not in any way endorse or approve of illegal drug use. I like the farmers market. When it's open I buy from my local farmers to help my local economy. And, they have killer deals.

As far as organic vs conventional I don't think it matters with fruit. There isn't any processing when it comes to fresh fruit. I think organic foods are better when it comes to package foods. Then I know I'm not getting all those trans fats and processing crap.

the thing with fruit and veggies is they pick them in a pre-ripened state (refered to as breakers) then, force ripen with gas. the fruit does not have the time needed to fully develope all it's goodness. it does not matter if you buy these at the grossery store or the farmers market (accept for the deal$) if it is out of season, early season, or not a fruit indigenest of your area...it is gassed. just my .02 from owning a produce store. (most money i ever lost in a 24 hr period...should get an award for that!!!)

damn, i'm sorry bro....hey, look at it this way, thanks to nafta (bill clinton), we have a huge influx of mexican produce, witch does not have nearly the regulations put on it as far as fertalization, and growing conditions (irragation procedures are qustionable at best) and the wholesales fruit and veggie brokers can ship and recieve from the same doc as domestic produce!!( not that a broker would ever cut there cost and widen there proffit margins by cutting cases of fruit with cheaper untraceable, undetectable foriegn produce).so the next time your at you farmers market (witch most markets also work as a point of shipping for brokers) just remember, there's a 80% chance you are getting exactly what your paying for!! and that's a much larger percentage than if you go to the grocery and do the buying...and feel good that even in the coldest of winter, when the market is closed, you'll at least be buying something that was picked with the intention of a consumer consuming it from said grocery store.......you dont even want me to get started on canned fruit and veggies.
