    do any of you use bcaa drinks for supplementation? i was thinking of adding them to my bulking cycle soon what is your take on them

    Do not do the drinks, use Optimum 2222 BCAA caps, pop a couple with each meal.

    Most folks say if you eat a balanced meal you get all the bcaa's you need. BCAA's are needed to process and transport all nutrition to the cells, so they can repair and grow, so if you are lacking in a few amino acids, possibility of not being as effecient all around.

    For me supplementation is like the last 5%. And once a person is very aware of body and how it reacts and what their optimum energy and training levels are that 5% difference for most is noticable, example, on a 300 lb bench your talking 15 lbs. , and for most of us that is a noticeable amount.

    So, I take em and have been for years and years and years, lot's of old time pro's are still proponents Frank Zane, Dave Draper etc.

    Overall though, like almost everything in life, worth a try.

        Hey Jack, just wanted to qualify, in now way saying liquid drinks are bad, just saying I've always used caps or tabs, just me, although gotta believe liquid drinks much more expensive.

          I've used the liquid drinks with good results but it is expensive so if you are on a budget then the caps will suffice

            i add optimum bcaa powder to my shakes it is a little cheaper than the tabs.

                  i read an article that said BCAAs before and after a workout decease muscle catabolism significantly. i would save them for after the cycle when you are catabolic.

                    BCAA's act as nitrogen carriers which assist the muscles in synthesizing other aminos needed for anabolic muscle action. In simpler terms, it is a combining of simpler aminos to form a complex whole muscle tissue[1.]. Therefore, BCAA's stimulate production of insulin, the main function of which is to allow circulating blood sugar to be taken up by the muscle cells and used as a source of energy. This insulin production promotes amino acid uptake by the muscle. BCAA's are both anabolic and anti-catabolic because of their ability to significantly increase protein synthesis, facilitate the release of hormones such as growth hormone (GH), IGF-1, and insulin, and help maintain a favorable testosterone to cortisol ratio[1].

                    BCAA's are also excellent anti-catabolic because they can help prevent protein breakdown and muscle loss, which is significantly important to those who are pre-contest diets. During these times of low caloric intake, the use of BCAA is strongly recommended because there is a greater risk of muscle loss due to a decrease in the rate of protein synthesis and an increase of proteolysis, which is the hydrolytic breakdown of proteins into simpler, soluble substances such as peptides and amino acids, as occurs during digestion[4.].

                      Jipped, I got this from a Nutrition book called:

                      Nutrition: Concepts and Controversies, 9th addition p. 388

                      "Some athletes - particularly bodybuilders and weight lifters - believe that consuming large doses of amino acids will help build muscles. Amino acid supplements are unnecessary. Healthy athletes eating a well-balanced diet never need them, and in a few unfortunate cases, these supplements have proved dangerous. Taking amino acid supplements puts the body in a too-much-too little bind. Amino acids compete for carriers, and an overdose of one can limit the availability of some other needed amino acids, setting up both a possible toxicity of the supplemented one and a deficiency of the others."

                      "Specifically, branced-chain amino acids (BCAA) are advertised as a source of fuel for the exercising body. What the ads leave out is that compared to glucose and fatty acids, BCAA provide very little fuel to working muscles, and when they are needed, the muscles have plenty on hand. In research, no consistent findings exist to indicate a performance benefit from supplemental BCAA. What is known, though, is that a diet too low in carbohydrates or energy triggers activity of an enzyme that breaks down BCAA for energy. Conversely, the athlete who consumes adequate carbohydrates and calories conserves BCAA in the tissues. Perhaps more importanly, large doses of BCAA can raise plasma ammonia concentrations, causing fatigue and, possibly, transient impairment of brain function."
