The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advised consumers to avoid purchase and consumption of a vitamin B dietary supplement, Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50, over health risk issues.
The warning is based on laboratory tests that have indicated presence of two potentially harmful anabolic steroids, including methasterone, a controlled substance, and dimethazine.
It further said that the supplement manufacturer, Mira Health Products, has not mentioned about anabolic on the labeling of the product and they should not be present in a dietary supplement.
Underling the health risk associated with such OTCs, FDA center for drug evaluation and research of the office of compliance director Howard Sklamberg said that products marketed as a vitamin contain undisclosed steroids pose a real danger to consumers and are prohibited.
"The FDA is committed to ensuring that products marketed as vitamins and dietary supplements do not pose harm to consumers," Sklamberg added.
Approximately 29 adverse reports pertaining to the use of Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50 has been registered, including fatigue, muscle cramping, and myalgia (muscle pain), as well as laboratory findings for abnormal liver and thyroid function, and cholesterol levels.
The FDA said that females who used this product reported unusual hair growth and missed menstruation, and males reported impotence and findings of low testosterone
