R-alpha lipoic acid (RALA) in a 600 mg daily dose was found to reduce nerve pain from a herniated disc over a 60-day period, allowing 71 percent of study participants to reduce their pain medication. R-alpha lipoic acid is a well-known nerve antioxidant that protects the nerves from stress, including ongoing pain.
In this double-blind, randomized, comparative study, some participants took 1,180 mg per day of acetyl-l-carnitine (ALC), a nutrient known to improve nerve conductivity. This nutrient also improved pain, but to a lesser extent than R-alpha lipoic acid.
Nerve-related pain is a difficult issue to address, so it’s welcome news that researchers are testing nutrients for their effectivity in this regard. The human study cited above is considered preliminary in nature, as it was conducted in a hospital setting and did not have a placebo group.
Another one of my favorite nutrients to support nerve health is calcium AEP, which provides nourishment for myelin sheathing of nerves and, in my experience, is quite helpful in doses of 600 mg to 1200 mg per day. Also, hyaluronic acid is a helpful nutrient for disc health, as discs are actually composed of this nutrient.
