  • The Vital Role of Selenium in Thyroid Function and Health

Scientists now report that many people are likely to benefit from selenium1 supplementation. Selenium is the key mineral that enables the conversion of thyroid hormone from T4 to T3 (the biologically active form). Selenium is also required to make the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which protects the thyroid gland, and includes protecting it from thyroid autoimmune problems.
Earlier studies clearly demonstrate that 200 mcg of selenium per day can reduce the level of thyroid autoantibodies2 by 40 percent. A recent case study documented that as selenium levels went up in the blood from supplementation, glutathione peroxidase3 rose, and thyroid autoantibodies declined 76 percent.
Interestingly, another study shows that selenium is not only linked to the level of glutathione peroxidase, but also to the level of progesterone in young women. This study clearly links selenium status, thyroid function, and adequate progesterone. Since a lack of progesterone causes a multitude of PMS related symptoms, selenium status may be a new key to help this problem, along with its well-documented antioxidant, immune boosting, and thyroid support properties.
