  • Vitamin B12 Status Predicts Cognitive Decline

Vitamin B12 is essential for healthy nervous system function, including preserving memory and mental ability. A five year study of 549 elderly community-living adults shows that those who had the lowest blood levels of vitamin B12 experienced the greatest decline in cognitive function in the five year period.
The people in the study group were divided into five different levels according to their B12 status. Those in the two lowest groups had significantly more cognitive decline. Researchers were surprised that even modest deficiency posed a problem.
B vitamins in general, and B12 in particular, are needed for energy production and brain metabolism. They are basic nutrients for nerve health, and their status often declines with age. Thus, taking a daily supplement with B12, especially the co-enzyme form known as methylcobalamin, is a simple health basic for any person wishing to maintain better cognitive function during aging.
