  • Nutrients Act Together to Boost Arterial Health

Cells that line the insides of your arteries are potential weak links to your cardiovascular health. When these cells are damaged from irritants, free radicals, toxins, germs or some other stress they must be repaired. If repair mechanisms fail, damage accumulates and eventually becomes full-blown cardiovascular disease.
A new animal study shows that quercetin can boost the power of resveratrol to reduce experimentally induced arterial damage by a stunning 94 percent.
The researchers were trying to find ways to help prevent restenosis, an issue of common concern in patients who have gone through angioplasty or who have had stents placed in their arteries. Their goal was to discover ways for the arteries of such patients to not fill up with plaque and cause more problems.
In the experiment the researchers fed mice high fat diets until artery damage was observed. One group of mice was given resveratrol, and their artery damage was reduced by 76 percent. Another group was given quercetin, and had no reduction in damage. However, when quercetin was added to the resveratrol a significant synergistic boost in protection occurred, offering 94 percent reduction in damage.
The researchers showed that the combination of resveratrol and quercetin could reduce inflammatory signaling associated with arterial damage in a better manner than either nutrient could do alone.
This study demonstrates the power of nutrients acting together to support health, further boosting the already stellar reputation of resveratrol as a leading cardiovascular nutrient.
