In my article last month, Natural Supplements for Male Sexual Performance, I explained the vital importance of a good supply of friendly nitric oxide (eNOS) for both male health and cardiovascular health. The emerging science on resveratrol now indicates its help in support of male sexual function.
It has been known for a while that resveratrol helps boost the production of eNOS by turning on the enzyme that helps make it (nitric oxide synthase). This alone would tend to be beneficial for male sexual function. Now a new study demonstrates that resveratrol works directly on phosphodiesterase enzymes, the precise mechanism of action of male drugs like Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra. If phosphodiesterase enzymes are slowed down then cGMP levels will remain higher for a longer period of time, enabling an erection to last longer (or occur in the first place). While resveratrol may not be as strong as one of the drugs on a short-term basis, it may indeed be all a man needs to help him over the hump and back in the right direction – while also providing general cardiovascular and anti-aging benefits.
This new study lends support to a 2011 animal study involving diabetic mice. The researchers showed that as the mice became diabetic they lost erectile function as eNOS and cGMP levels went down. The researchers showed that resveratrol by itself could restore the normal levels of cGMP and thus erectile function in these diabetic mice. They also showed that resveratrol combined with Levitra had a synergistic beneficial result, due to the general ability of resveratrol to improve overall friendly nitric oxide status. An earlier animal study with rabbits also showed improved erectile function from resveratrol.
These studies support the use of resveratrol for general anti-aging of metabolism, improved cardiovascular health, and improved male function.
