    What is melatonin? Melatonin is a hormone that is in your body naturally. It can be used as a medicine. To take melatonin one can take a pill or it can be in forms that allow you to take it under your tongue or in the cheek.

    If you have ever suffered from jetlag you may have taken melatonin supplements. You can also use it if you are switched from a first shift job to a third shift job and you need to rearrange your sleeping cycle. Melatonin is great for those that suffer from insomnia as well as other sleep disorders. Sleep disorders such as delayed sleep phase syndrome, insomnia along with ADHD, insomnia due to high blood pressure medications and it is even safe to help with sleep problems in children. Sleep problems in children may occur due to cerebral palsy, autism and mental retardation. Always talk to your doctor before giving your child or children any type of herb, medication or dietary supplement as in certain situations it may not be safe to take.

    Although it is safe to use this dietary supplement in children, do not take it when you are pregnant. See your doctor if you want to start taking melatonin during your pregnancy as it is not known if it will harm your unborn baby. If you are nursing your baby, talk to your doctor as well.

    If you have tried to quit smoking or are thinking of trying to quit smoking, melatonin dietary supplements may help you with the side effects that usually occur when you want and try to quit smoking.

    There are so many reasons people may take melatonin. Some of the reasons include Alzheimer's disease, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, menopause, birth control, epilepsy and many more.

    Before taking melatonin make sure you share with your doctor every medication, vitamin, herb and dietary supplement you take. Although it has not been recorded that melatonin may not mix well with some medications, etc., it is best to be safe and share this information with your doctor. You should also share with your doctor any allergies or sensitivities to medication you may have. Some people may not be good candidates to take melatonin.

    Although very uncommon, side effects may include anaphylaxis which is life threatening. If you have this allergic reaction which includes difficulty breathing, throat closing, swelling of your lips, tongue, face or hives seek emergency medical attention immediately. You may also suffer from headache, drowsiness or stomach upset when taking melatonin. If any of these symptoms occur, speak to your primary care physician.

    Many people can successfully take melatonin dietary supplements with much success. If you feel melatonin is right for you, contact your primary care physician today.

    Im down with the melatonin! I gotta remember to take that stuff. I forget and the next thing you know, Im asleep. LOL...Sounds like it helps more than just sleep, so its worth taking. It definitely decreases with age, so might as well take it. Thanks for the reminder Diva

          I gotta dig up a good article I read about Melatonin and it's effect on Testosterone. It has a negative affect on it. Can't remember the specifics though.
