  • Clean Bulking with MCT

    With summer almost upon us the gym is buzzing with people looking to jump start their slim-down programs.

    Gain Lean MassLow carb diets and high-rep training prescriptions are everywhere, but what if you just haven’t put on the bulk you desire, and you’re just not ready for a springtime cut? More importantly, what if you’re just a lanky individual – a “hard gainer” – year round and cutting just isn’t in your vocabulary? The last thing you want is to jump on the lean-out bandwagon. It’s time to start looking at some alternatives to help you get the mass you want, and ultimately achieve that tight, toned, physique.
    What Not To Do

    Jump on a see-food diet and put on the weight, good or bad;
    Accept the fact that you are lanky, keep your training the same and spend the summer in over sized T-shirts.

    Here’s what I’d recommend: be wise about boosting your caloric intake, add physique friendly MCT, and watch your friends marvel as you perform the leanest and cleanest bulk possible.
    Medium Chain Triglycerides

    MCT, or medium chain triglycerides, are fatty acid esters that consist of 6 to 12 carbons. This composition makes these fats unique in terms of their function. The difference between MCT and long chain triglycerides, LCT, can be found in the way the molecules are broken down. Most fats require pancreatic enzymes to be broken down into smaller molecules, but the smaller molecular structure of MCT require less energy and fewer enzymes to break down.

    MCTs function more similar to carbohydrates than fat.

    The breakdown of MCT occurs in the saliva and gastric juices. The fats are absorbed directly from the intestines into the portal vein where they are sent straight to the liver and burned as energy. MCT are often used as dietary fats and oils in ketosis diets and can be consumed on their own or used for cooking.
    Ensure Adequate Calorie Consumption

    If your goal is to add size, you need to ensure that your caloric intake is greater than your expenditure. However, the types of calories you consume will make all the difference in the size you create. Adding additional healthy fats such as MCT to your diet is one way to help increase your daily caloric intake without the fear of storing excess fats. In fact, MCT may also actually lead to fat loss.

    Studies show that MCT can actually stimulate thermogenesis (fat burning) and provide a good kickstart to ketosis, a state where the body actually burns fat as energy.

    Additionally, MCT and coconut oils, although higher in calories than protein and carbs (4 calories per gram), are slightly less caloric then other fatty acids. A typical gram of fat carries a caloric density of 9 calories, whereas a gram of MCT is only about 8 calories. Moreover, these fats can help keep calories in check as they aid in appetite control by stabilizing blood sugar levels and fending off cravings.

    Adding MCT to your diet is not only beneficial to your bulk, but they can also help in many other areas of your training. They will help increases energy levels by providing instant energy. They also increase endurance by supporting glycogen stores, helping them last longer and will also improve thyroid function.

    Good article. I've been wanting to try MCTs for a while. Think I will after my show.
