Back in November of 2010 I explained how researchers had demonstrated that oregano could boost dopamine levels, in turn helping a person have a better mood as well as motivational drive. Another study along these same lines has now found that oregano can boost serotonin levels as well. Low serotonin and dopamine are two common findings in individuals struggling with mood.
Oregano was actually shown to act on three key neurotransmitter systems (serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline). It was found to inhibit reuptake of these neurotransmiiters, thereby leaving more of them available in nerve synapses for better nerve transmission. In this animal study not only was the neurotransmiiter status boosted, there were direct behavioral improvement demonstrating the anti-depressant effect.
The researchers concluded that oregano “may be effective in enhancing mental well-being in humans.” Oregano is a powerful natural immune support compound with a mood enhancing twist.
