  • The Importance of Carotenes for Breast Cancer Protection

The lifespan potential for any mammalian species directly relates to the amount of carotenes in their blood, which slowly deposit in body tissues over time and offer protection. It has been known for some time that carotene accumulation in women is highly concentrated in their reproductive system. Thus, it should come as no surprise that researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health, after reviewing 18 studies, concluded that carotene intake reduces the risk for estrogen-negative breast cancer (breast cancer that is not fueled by excess estrogen).

The researchers found that alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, and lutein/zeaxanthin intakes were inversely associated with the occurrence of estrogen-negative breast cancer. This type of breast cancer is more aggressive and harder to prevent a recurrence, since it does not respond to anti-estrogen therapy. Estrogen-negative breast cancer accounts for 21.5% of breast cancer in white women and 35.2% of breast cancer in African American women.

Breast cancer risk is reflected by a variety of issues and risk factors in comparison to how many things you do to protect yourself, including a variety of nutrients known to be of help. Consider natural carotenes, both from your diet and from dietary supplements, as part of your protective team.
