The Surprising Truth About Dairy Consumption
    Dairy-Consumption.jpg

Got milk? You may want to reconsider if you do. There’s some things you should know about your dairy consumption and what it does to your body. A shirtless man holds a soccer ball on his waist. His mustache is pure white. To the right of him you see two lines: Goal by Beckham. Body by milk. Plenty of girls hung this poster on their bedroom walls with great adoration; not so much for the milk that was being advertised, though.
This poster was one of the many produced for the “got milk?” ad campaign that ran from 1993 to 2014. Over the 20 years that these posters, commercials, and ads were created, milk and dairy consumption spiked across the United States. They made milk cool, and all of its byproducts soon followed suit. The calcium and it’s support for bone health was a strong selling point, as was the protein that assisted in muscle growth and retention. It was hard to find a fridge that didn’t find a dairy product of some sort taking up space.

But what if this dairy domination wasn’t for the best after all? What if what we assumed was quality and natural nutrition was, and still is, causing more health problems than it’s fixing? Unfortunately, science is beginning to show that may be the case. Dairy products don’t seem to be as beneficial to our health as they once were believed to be. Scientists have done extensive research to not only find negative side effects of dairy consumption, but completely discount some of the main reasons we would opt for a dairy product in the first place. Let’s start there.
MILK & DAIRY HELP BUILD STRONG BONES, RIGHT? NOT SO FAST!
One of the big pieces of the pro-dairy propaganda is the quality of calcium that it provides. Studies have shown, however, that dairy products don’t help your bones, but actually hurt them. It’s not as if your glass of milk or block of cheese will do direct damage to your bones; it’s harm is done more indirectly.

Since milk and it’s dairy brethren are infused with animal sourced protein, when it is consumed, it acidifies your body’s pH levels, which triggers your body to do what it can to correct this new imbalance. The calcium within your body happens to be one of the best acid neutralizers you have to offer, so when the animal protein creates acidity, calcium is released to fight back against it. But guess where most of your body’s calcium is stored? That’s right. In your bones. So, even though you are ingesting calcium as you consume a dairy product, you’re losing some in the process due to the animal based protein that your body is getting it’s hands on. At the very least, your calcium levels are canceling each other out. At the most, your consumption of milk or other dairy products is actually depleting your bones calcium resources, leaving you vulnerable to fractures and breaks.
Isn’t it ironic that one of the biggest proposed benefits of dairy is how it can strengthen your bones, but in reality, when you eat or drink something that came from a cow, you’re actually making your bones more vulnerable? In fact, the countries that consume the most dairy also have the highest rates of osteoporosis diagnosis. Coincidence? Not likely.
ASTHMA, MIGRAINES, & WHAT DAIRY HAS TO DO WITH IT
There’s no need to sugarcoat this one, let’s get right to the numbers. In one study, scientists observed the symptoms of 48 patients who reported that they either had frequent migraines or asthma attacks. During the course of the study, the patients removed dairy from their diets. 33 out of 48 reported that their symptoms of asthma and/or migraines improved significantly. Read that again. 33 out of 48! That’s 69% of the patients in the study.

You see, milk happens to have plenty of allergens packed into it, so when it’s eliminated from the diet, the lessening of migraines, asthma, and symptoms isn’t surprising. If you suffer from migraines, asthma, or any other affliction that might be related to an allergen contained in dairy products, try to wean yourself off and observe your symptoms. I wouldn’t be surprised if your body reacted positively to your adjustments.
KEEP YOUR MAN SAFE FROM PROSTATE CANCER
We all know that milk packs a good punch of calcium in each serving, but, as you’ve read above, it’s not as beneficial to your body as it seems. As if your bone health wasn’t enough of a concern, there’s also research that shows that higher consumption of calcium and the dairy products that contain it can increase the risk of prostate cancer by 30-50%.

We were led to believe that drinking a couple glasses of milk a day would increase bone strength and keep us healthy, but in fact it may be decreasing your bone strength while leaving your man vulnerable to a very serious form of cancer.
    CONCLUSION
Dairy products may have been promoted as a natural way to improve your health, but recent research has proven to show otherwise. Don’t let David Beckham and the other celebrities who rocked a milk mustache fool you; milk and dairy could do you much more harm than good. If you’re a frequent consumer of the fruits of cows labor, it’s time that you consider an alternative. Many people have benefited from a diet that excludes dairy, and have found other sources for their protein and calcium. Don’t believe the “got milk?” hype. Dairy is not the superfood category that they told you it was.
