Nutrition is a very important part of sports performance. When you are putting your fitness plan together, it should receive a lot of attention.

The basics of any healthy diet are vitamins, minerals and proteins. These are the building blocks of a well-balanced plan that will help keep you fit. You will, however, want to add supplements to your diet that will give you the extra nutrients you will need when working out.

Muscles need food. It's as simple as that. If they are going to grow properly, they need to be fed. The key is feeding them with healthy foods instead of foods devoid of nutrients and full of bad fats.

The important thing to remember is not all fats are bad. You can get plenty of good fats in foods like fish so choose them carefully. Stay away from bad fats like those found in non-lean meats and whole milk. Instead, drink skim milk to reduce the amount of fat you receive in each serving. The same is true when choosing cheeses. Make sure they are low in fat and don't incorporate them into your diet every day.

Fruits and vegetables will help provide the vitamins and minerals you need. You can choose to eat the vegetables raw or cooked. When you cook them, be careful how you do it. Boiling and steaming is always a good idea. Should you decide to use oil, make sure it is a healthy choice like olive oil. Use very little oil.

Carbohydrates are very important when you are training for any sport. They are an essential part of fitness. There are plenty of foods that contain carbohydrates.

There are many sports drinks available that contain carbohydrates as well as electrolytes. This will help you retain energy while working out and keep you from becoming dehydrated.

You can also use protein powder to make shakes and smoothies. Protein aids in the recovery of muscles which is essential between intense workouts.

Both sports drinks and protein shakes are usually consumed just after a workout, thought you may choose to consume them at any time. These supplements will give you added nutrients and should only be used to add to your diet. They should never be used to replace food. You may choose to eat a protein bar for a snack, but don't rely on it alone to get you through your entire day.

Multi-vitamins are another dietary supplement that many athletes choose to use. You can purchase one-a-day vitamins that usually contain all the daily essentials you'll need. Individual vitamin supplements are also available.

Dietary supplements can be found in health food stores. Some may also be available at your local supermarket.

Nutrition should never be ignored at all, but it is especially important when you are training for any sport. Adhere to a healthy diet and you will see a significant improvement in your overall athletic performance.
