I'm going to get real hypothetical in answering this question. The reason I'm choosing this route is because I've seen a prescription thyroid medication (tiratricol), a prescription asthma medication (theophylline), and a "topical" sterile suspension of prohormones being marketed as supplements without the DEA or FDA so much as batting an eye. So here goes: my favorite prohormone is 19-norandrostenediol. This prohormone is an analog of 19-nortestosterone (nandrolone) and is probably 80% as anabolic as base nandrolone. The problem is that neither one (nandrolone or 19-norandrostenediol) works well—if at all—when taken orally. This is why you see injectable nandrolones that are esterified (like nandrolone decanoate). You'd probably need to consume upward of 500-1000 mg orally per day to see much happen with either.

Forget the "cyclo" prohormones, also...you'd have to swallow too much of the compound for them to be really effective. Base testosterone has the same problem as the "nors" in that, when taken orally, it doesn't do much. But when you alpha-alkylate testosterone at C-17 (like methyl testosterone), you do get a pretty nice oral compound. In fact, quite a few oral steroids are alpha-alkylated. Whether or not they "work" as mass builders isn't the main issue here...I'm simply looking at the pharmaceutics of the compound. In other words, if you alpha-alkylate, you get higher plasma levels with a lower dose.

What would happen if some clever person alpha-alkylated nandrolone? Well, it's already been done. The compound is called MENT (7 alpha, methyl-19-nortestosterone). If this compound sounds somewhat familiar to the more chemically savvy of you out there, you'll recognize that it's very similar to a real hardcore androgen called mibolerone, which is the active ingredient found in the veterinary steroid Cheque Drops (7 alpha, 17 alpha-dimethyl 19-nortestosterone).

What's so special about MENT? MENT is ten times more potent than testosterone in regard to the clinically desirable endpoints of anabolism, but only twice as potent at stimulating prostate growth. This means that MENT may have a wider therapeutic index than testosterone for human androgen replacement and male contraception. The average terminal half-life and metabolic clearance rate (MCR) of MENT are about 40 minutes and 2,360 L/day, respectively. This is much faster than the values reported for testosterone. The faster MCR can be attributed, in part, to the finding that MENT does not bind to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). So what's great about this? Well, it's far more desirable to have a steroid in the "free" or unbound state so that much more of it can dimerize with the androgen/anabolic receptors and, thus, stimulate muscle growth. The faster half-life means that you can have much more control over plasma levels (even if you have to take the compound more times per day).

Additionally, in animal studies, MENT doesn't seem to have the "aggressive-inducing" qualities of testosterone. Also, MENT does not get 5 alpha-reduced due to steric hindrance from the 7 alpha-methyl group. Therefore, the androgenic potency of MENT is not "amplified" as happens with testosterone (which is 5-a-reduced to DHT). These metabolic differences are responsible for the increased anabolic activity of MENT compared to testosterone. Sounds pretty good so far, so why haven't we seen it? Well, part of the biological effects of testosterone are mediated by its aromatization to estrogens. The fact is that MENT is also aromatized to 7 alpha-methyl estradiol, a very potent and long-lasting estrogen. This is a bad thing for bodybuilder types. If you wanted to use MENT, you'd absolutely have to utilize high dosages of anti-aromatases like Cytadren or Arimidex. Alternatively, you could try a competitive estrogen agonist like Nolvadex or Evista.

What does all of this have to do with prohormones? It's feasible that some "on the edge" supplementeur may decide to make 7 alpha, methyl-19-norandrostenediol and sell it as a supplement. Is it legal? Well, I dunno. But if you can sell tiratricol and theophylline (known prescription drugs), and if you can sell all sorts of mineral salts/esters that aren't exactly naturally occurring (e.g. chromium picolinate), then why can't you make and sell 7 alpha, methyl-19-norandrostenediol? This would, in my opinion, truly be the best prohormone that you could ever hope to use. I'd bet it would be equipotent—in regard to anabolism and androgenism—to most of the real steroids on the market.
