Yea I knew a guy who tore his and he could not walk. You want to know the sick part? This is how the fix it: the docs put you out of course and thenstrap you into this devise by your ankles. Then, they raise you up by your ankles so you are suspended upside down. Then, they attach the part of your achillis that goes up the leg to a cable attached to the ceiling (or some stationary device above - I forget exactly) and then they lower your body until the tendon is stretched back to the ankle. Then, they wrap the end with wire and attach the wire to the your ankle. I don't know how it works but the guy who had it done plays indoor football (rec league) with me and he moves great. So, its fixable but its painfull as hell.
