Burning more calories does not necessarily mean you are burning fat. If you do cardio to intensly you can easily burn up lean muscle tissue which is of course not beneficial. Look at long distance runners...how many of them have any muscle? Now look at sprinters...they are fuckin buff. Also, it's true that your glucose levels are the lowest in the morning, but so are your amino acid levels circulating through your blood stream. I'd like to see some of the studies that indicate that high intensity cardio burns more "FAT", not calories, than cardio done within the target heart range for lipolysis (fat oxidation) ACE certification is very credible, and this is the method they recomment for maximum fat burning. I have also spoke with most of the trainers at my gym and they tell me the same thing. But the most important aspect that a trainer told me is that is you do cardio in your target hear range for 40 minutes, you are far less likely to loose any muscle tissue than if you ran hard for 20-30 minutes. I'm not saying that you burn more calories doing it this way, but I truly believe you burn more "fat" from this method of cardio

I forgot to add something. There are two forms or cardio which work best for burning fat and preserving muscle

      1) Up hill wind sprints done in short duration but with high intensity.

      2) target heart rate cardio done for 40-60 minutes of duration.

If you gusy have not tried these methods there is no reason no to, I know the traditional thinking is that if I"m breating hard and sweating my ass off I must be burning all kinds of fat, but the experts seem to disagree with this theory.

^^^^That makes sense.......i only do cardio 2x/week because i'm on a bulker at the moment. But if you think about comparing sprinters to long distant runners, DAMN, sprinters look like bodybuilders! I've never tried short/intense cardio, but will be after my bulker. But i have to agree with "trefling".

It is a busy life that I am living right now, but I will definitely post some studies in the near future.

You are definitely right on in several areas. As a former trainer (ISSA certified, which in my humble opinion is ten times better than ACE, compare their study material and I think most will agree, ACE just happens to be the most popular, mainly because of price, not quality, but remember that anyone can get a multitude of certifications. The only certification that represents a true knowledgeable trainer is CSCS, they must first earn a BS/BA before taking their exam, but I digress) I often used the sprinter/marathon comparison. I was in no way implying that anyone should run for hours on end to lose weight.

What is FAT? Fat is adipose tissue. Adipose tissue is what excess calories are stored as; excess carbs, excess fat, and yes even excess protein is stored as adipose tissue.

You are right, there is a difference between burning just calories and burning adipose tissue. And much of this is determined by diet, exercise methods, and timing.

Weight loss will stir up debate between professional who are way more intelligent than I. One reason why is because we are individuals that respond differently to stimuli, and no generic approach is going to fit everyone. But there are underlying laws that need to be understood before we can make knowledgeable adjustments.

Let me finish rambling with this: If you go to the store to buy a $10 item, and you have no cash in your pocket, what do you do? You reach for your money that is stored via an ATM/Debit/Credit card. But if you have cash, you pay with what you have.

Whether you are in your target heart rate or not, if you have food (calories) in your stomach (which some foods can take many hours to digest) that is what you are going to use up first for energy. Your body is going to metabolize the most readily available food.

If you have ever ran sprints, especially up hill sprints, you will know that unless you are an Olympic athlete you will not stay in your target heart rate. But I agree, sprints and other high intensity exercises for 30 mins max will work best.

I guess I am not finished rambling yet; Another study I will try to find is one that discredits the typical a persons target heart rate is calculated, but I will save it for a new thread.

No offense Trefling, I just disagree with target heart rate training.

No problem Litegear...........it sounds like you really know what your talking about. Hey I do agree with you on just about everything you just wrote. I never believe the low intensity cardio worked untill I tried it. I also agree that high intensity up hill windsprints are in fact the best method. The problem is I live in Kansas City and this place is about as flat as anywhere I have ever been. So with this being the case I do what I believe is the second best method. I know everyone is different but it has worked for me, but I think you are right too.

      peace bro

yep, yer right, by target heart rate i assume u mean staying on a calculated heartrate ranging from 65-75% of your maximum heartrate, thank God i bought that heartrate-monitor (polar pulse watch), makes it so much easier to target the correct heartrate for fatburning. in other news I went to see a friend yesterday, who had taken some pose-pics, so now I'm not that worried about them lovehandles, cause sadly he had NOTHING that'd get up on stage lookin' good.alll he's got is volume, but no muscular separations peaks, or details.knowing this i went home and took some pics of my own, that determined the fact that I'm in a good overall shape for someone who just got of a bulker.so in the end I'm pretty happy with myself, despite them handles, at least for the time being.I hope that my trip to thailand will draw some sust-fluid outta me, not that i carry very much, but still. Well, thanx guys, always a pleasure talkin' 2 ya'll
