Look up the rules of your State here:

In my State, hospitals and such are not required to take your used needles for disposal. You are also forbidden from tossing the red biowaste containers into the regular trash. Thus, if I use one of those red containers I have to keep it forever. What they recommend I do is to put the used needles into a plastic container, such as an empty laundry detergent bottle, and seal it shut tight with tape. Then write "DO NOT RECYCLE" on the bottle and toss it into the regular trash. The garbage truck will eventually have its trash compactor used, which will crush the plastic bottle and break it open, spilling the needles everywhere. The rules don't say that last part, but I am sure that happens quite a bit.
Anyway, the US State rules link is from BD, so it should be reputable to use. Stay legal, my friends.
