I had the steroid injections done twice, bother times I had an adverse reaction that increased the pain. The Drs said that I could receive an injection once every six weeks. That's masking the underlying issue. As athletes we know that it's not the best idea to perform while injured.

guns01 makes a good point in the fact that he can't go to a Dr without a referral. The problem today is that the military is downsizing. They have budget cuts and a lot of work is being done by contractors to minimize the liability of any potential problems done by the military staff. That being said, they will find any reason to discharge anyone they can. I was fighting to stay in and was advised to take a medical separation. Having had 4 surgeries, and future ship would look at my medical records and see that my L4-S1 had been worked on. As a welder having to carry heavy gear, they would see me as a liability for injury.

I could have signed the papers to forego the medical discharge and told them I wanted to stay in. Had I done that, I would have been given 3 chances of to try and get on a ship. If I were to be denied by all 3 commands, I would have been separated from the Navy under a certain code that I can't think of right now. I took copies of my medical file and went to different ships that were pier side. Every single medical officer told me they would not take me. So I took the medboard.

Being that I took the medical discharge, I was able to go through the process I submitting all of my paperwork to the VA in order to get a disability rating. I also received a severance check; something that I would not have gotten had I tried to stay in.

I know that some questions you're asking pertain to what he should do in order to be treated. I'm giving you worst case scenario based on my experience.

He will need to go in to the Drs and hassle them to get the treatment he needs.
