Article 1) Why Wear Gym Gloves?
We’ve read a ton of blog posts and articles about taking care of your hands at the gym. Your hands are your most important tool to determining quality lifts, and they hold, press, grasp, and grip everything you touch at the gym. So hand care is really important when taking in to account you have limited time and to workout and you want to get the most out of every workout.
We have decided to dedicate a series of blogs on our site to hand health and care. We will be publishing this 6 part blog, once a week, please feel free to share via social media if you find this info helpful!

There are dozens of tightly packed nerves in your hand, over time lifting weights can do a lot of damage.

Every different lift, pull, or press puts different pressure on different parts of your hands in this article we are going to explore how lifting can damage your hands and how to prevent common injuries due to over use, heavy lifts and bad form.

Weight Lifters, Body Builders and athletes in general have a misconception that wearing hand protection during workouts makes you a wimp or someone who can’t handle the rigors of lifting. We’ve read dozens of message board comments and blogs on why you shouldn’t wear gloves. This advice is just plain wrong, while protection isn’t needed by everyone, if you are damaging your hands during your workout, or if your grip is compromised by the amount of weight you are lifting, then you should be wearing hand protection.
Choosing hand protection- Once you’ve determined that you need hand protection at the gym, the real question is: what kind of hand protection do you need? Depending on how you work out and how you are damaging your hands, your needs are very specific. We’ve noticed that many different styles of workout gloves cover much more of you hand than necessary, typically your palm and fingers are the only part of your hand actually touching the bar. So looking into hand protection that is open backed and breathable is highly recommended. If you are lifting heavy, doing bench press or Olympic Lifts, then extra palm padding and wrist support are a must. If you are doing pull ups and getting blisters on your fingers or need extra grip, get a glove that covers those areas.

Here are a few products we would highly recommend for offering maximum coverage and support, while allowing your hands to breathe.

Bear Grips offer great protection & grip while allowing hands to breathe.

NewGrip Gym Gloves cushion hands, are highly adjustable and offer great wrist support

Gorilla Grips are virtually indestructible and shield hands from blisters and calluses

The Right Stuff- Different Gym Gloves are made from dozens of different materials, from Cotton to Rubber and traditionally leather. The right materials depend on how you work out, what your preferences are and if you have allergies. Traditionally most gym gloves are constructed from leather. In our experience there are many materials that protect hands better than traditional leather gloves, neoprene being one of our favorites, below we have featured some gym hand protection made from non traditional materials that work really well to protect your hands. Our entire selection of gym gloves broken down by material is here.

Just Another WOD (JAW Gloves) are made from canvas for great grip and a natural feel

Nutra Strength Gym Gloves are 100% Neoprene with leather palms, and provide unparalleled fit and comfort
Check out our great selection of Gloves, Hand and Wrist Protection that are made of dozens of different kinds of materials take a look and think about what your are lifting, and how you want it to feel in your hands. Consider grip, feel, allergies and hand sweat management when selecting what kind of material you’d like your gloves to be.
Workout Intensity- Determining what kind of gloves or hand protection to purchase is largely based on how hard you workout. Typically thick heavy padding and wide wrist support is ideal for heavy intense lifts and thinner, more minimal hand protection is great for lighter workouts. Its important that you get the right hand protection for your level of workouts, or if your workouts vary its important to wear a versatile glove that can work for any kind of workouts. Here are some versatile gloves we would highly recommend that will serve you for any intensity of workout.

B Nooch Gym Gloves are solid, well built and great for any level of worktout

WODies are great protection against blisters for any level of workout
Again, its simple, if you are damaging your hands during your workouts, invest in protection. Your gym membership is expensive, especially if you workout in a CrossFit box, why miss workout days, or get a less effective workout trying to prove you are tougher than everyone there, by grinding through damaged hands.
