Today I am going to discuss the health effects of Omega-3 fatty acids.
Omega-3 fatty acids or n-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) which contain a carbon double bond (C=C) at the 3- position from omega end (methyl end). These are long chain fatty acids which are found mainly in fish oil and marine plants. n-3 fatty acids have effects on preventing inflammation by reducing the inflammatory blood markers like CRP, IL-6, and TNF-alpha. These fatty acids fight against depression and hypertension. Fish-eating communities have a lower risk of high blood pressure and inflammation due to enough consumption of PUFAs. PUFAs reduce the level of triglycerides and help to raise HDL (good cholesterol) level. They also prevent plaque formation in blood an lower the heart disease rate. Patients with the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease have shown a response to supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids to reduce fatty liver and inflammation. PUFAs fight against some autoimmune diseases like Arthritis, Crohn's disease etc. They have also effect on the age-related mental decline and some other mental disorders. Omega-3 fatty acids cannot be synthesized in mammals, so you have to intake enough PUFAs through your diet.
