Mousasi storms onto the U.S. scene crushing Babalu
So much for Renato "Babalu" Sobral's experience advantage. The sensation of 2008, Gegard Mousasi just blitzkreiged Babalu. Mousasi got the fight to the ground and had high side control. The Armenian from the Netherlands postured up and unloaded 17 unanswered punches on Babalu and left the Brazilian in a frozen state with shots 15 and 16. Referee John McCarthy moved in slowly as Mousasi simply stopped punching recognizing that Babalu was out. Mousasi picks up the Strikeforce light heavyweight title in just one minute in front of 13,524 at the HP Pavilion in Sa Jose.
Mousasi (26-2-1) spent the last three years fighting mostly in Japan and became a big name with his upset victory during the 2008 DREAM Middleweight Grand Prix. That was at 185 pounds. He looked like the much bigger fighter in this one at light heavyweight. He overpowered Babalu in tossing him to the mat.
Mousasi is an intriguing character. His aggression and ferocity during the fight were scary. Just seconds after he smashed Babalu (35-9) into oblivion, Mousasi walked around the cage looking like he had just walked off the treadmill. His stoicism is freakish.
