first time sparring with no shin pads. i am tore up and almost crippled LOL

makes me not want to block, so much less painful to check them like MMA fighters. my coach yelled at me when i just lifted the leg. its all fun and games when you are beating on a newb but in this case i was the newb

i guess i just have to keep getting the crap beat out of them until they are numb?

the pics dont do it justice

From what I understand it will simply hurt until the nerves are so damaged you can't feel the pain anymore.
then the skin and tissue become very scarred and hard.

After that - you should be OK.

Good luck. I don't think I could do it.

IVE READ THIS,Do NOT hit or rub your shins with any hard item! These can cause small cracks in the shin and can cause them to break along those lines if you kick hard. Best thing to do is to hit thai pads or a lightly padded heavy bag, My kick boxing trainer says he used a hard type wooden stick and rubbed up and down his shins until the nerve just went dead, took years but it happen.personaly jipped if your up there in age then why suffer. unless if your going to compete then yeah go for it but for us older guys I wont be kicking a tree any time soon. My body aches after 1 hour clas to begin with. theres a Heavybag specifically designed for Shin hardening

Do you not use shin pads? The shin pads are supposed to protect the bone and condition the shin at the same time. Our teacher never used to let us participate without the guards.

when I was over there, I saw these guys w a coke bottle taped to a broken golf club handle. They would just tap the shin bone at first. then progress up to harder whacks and finally work on trees and posts. The bone starts to form ladder like structures along the stressed areas. There were guys kicking the crap outta palm trees. Same guys punching trees and post too. They start by punching into a bin of rice, then course sand, then small gravel...progressive resistance training!
These guys are the reason I got my ass on a plane and came home.
Mui Thai is not for those afraid of commitment. You have to be willing to break and crack bones to earn the fists of stone...
I was just not one of those guys!

been using pads for a long time but i do intend going to some local competitions with my class mates. my coach says i need to train the shins or the pain the first time without pads in competition will cause me to disengage and turn my leg so it dosnt hit the same spot. he says you can wreck a knee doing that.

nigbo told me to use a rolling pin and lubricant and roll it out once a day.

trained sunday, my legs look like they are from a corpse. i tool the day off today to let them rest and ice them. knees feel fine. thighs and shins are ruined.

maybe i am too old for this. very disheartening for me as i love doing it and want to keep up with the young guys. my wife thinks i should just stick to BJJ only

when we get into our 40's jipped its sometimes better to save our body then to beat it up and do a martial arts thats not as physical on us.doing and learning the motions and hitting the pads and stuff is all good but to start competing at a older age sometimes we cant. I understand that we want to compete but it comes a time to say we cant do that much. unless a person is natural gifted and has the ability to do all that stuff and he doesnt hurt, but the majority of us are normal guys. I spar at half speed we dont go full contact kick ass bust ya in the mouth but we do get hit and kicked

Okay, I see. If you are not wanting to really get into competition, maybe BJJ alone is that bad of an idea. I used to love doing it too, but I just wanted to learn the art and not compete in Muay Thai. You could just focus all of you time and attention on BJJ and compete there.

the thing is i havent been damaged. just hurt there is a diff. i am fairly durable and other than a broken foot and dislocated finger i have never had a real injury in MMA. hell i got hurt more power lifting in a month than i ever have fighting.

just seems i have to try 2X as hard for 1/2 the results as the young guys.

am i past my prime? i dont feel old..............i guess as my youth slips away it goes so slowly i dont notice the step slower every year and the one less rep but cumulatively it has effected me.

i am going to stick with it until i just cant. i can walk again without limping (train again tonight)

maybe its just pride, i am the oldest in my class (next oldest in 32) and they call me old man. never really bothered me until now. i feel i have somthing to prove. hope my pride dosnt get me wrecked.

i feel like the old lion on the discovery channel that has held his pride for years but now there are younger lions threatening to kick kick him out which is the end for the old lion, i know that wont make much sense to the young fellas. is 40 old?
