TweetHmmmm, karate huh. I guess real karate is cool. but 99% of teachers it is all about katas and forms and is all but worthless. wonderboy and machida have shown many karate techniques work but good ole Muay Thai I think is better for combat.
TweetKarate Combat returns Thursday night (September 27) with an eight-fight event which – in a first for any combat sport – will take place on the 102nd floor of One World Trade Center in New York City. The first two bouts, Gabrielle Cera vs Fernando Paz and Mathus Silva vs Edgar Skrivers, will be exclusive to UFC FIGHT PASS. The rest of the event will be also be live on UFC FIGHT PASS, along with Karate.com and other platforms. That the new promotion chose to hold a fight event 1,700ft above the streets of Manhattan is not nearly as surprising as you’d expect, given that ... Read the Full Article Here

TweetI'm going to disagree, we have formal training but we're not about sport. there is a difference between the "Paul Mitchell Karate" and what we do.

TweetSo I watched some vids of "Paul Mitchell Karate" fighters. I just do not get point karate. I mean if you are training legit karate it is good but from what I said is 99% is bunk. Maybe not that high but I bet it is 90% or better. We go to kick boxing tourneys where karate folk compete as well. Most adopt a more kickboxing or Muay Thai stance to be competitive. The bladed stance of MOST karate I have seen would be a gimme in Muay Thai as that front leg would get chewed up so fast.
The thing i fear most about a karate guy is the side kick to the face. I have never been KO'd by one but they hurt, move your torso back and open the body for a kick which also hurts.
I am not bad mouthing karate. I took classes when i was 12-14 and with my son 12 years ago. I think the most effective striking is not any traditional martial art but a combo of all. Muay Thai for instance you have a very square stance. It limits in and out movement and is better to just stand in front of a guy and trade shots with the lead leg at a 45 to check kicks. I adopted a dutch kickboxer stance and keep my upper body like a western boxer. My body is not as available and I can move laterally and in and out better.
Again no disrespect. None are perfect. I just see the karate black belts who could not fight their way out of a paper sack because their fat middle age coach has no idea what he is doing.
My brother stuck with Sho Do kan and he is a handful when we spar as it has that blitz style. It is his front leg that lets him down as it is so available.
TweetNo offense taken at all Brother. I just wanted to clarify the difference between the two. most people think of the flying 540's with all the yelling and flashy moves, Kempo Karate is very different. Check out Master Larry Tatum, that's more of what we do. we have a well rounded system that goes with todays fighting and street situation. what can ya do on the fly against todays average or someone with some experience. ground, weapon, stuff you'd encounter outside a ring. in a street situation you're not going to be wearing a helmet, cup, and covered in padded gear ? and when do ya ever have time to scream, throw some flashy TKD kicks and get into a stance ? Any one of those "Paul Mitchell" black belts would get their assed handed to them by a person with some real combat skill. Prolly ok for a kid for sport like Gymnastics or soccer, but not real life street combat.
