LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jon Jones could face a lengthy suspension from mixed martial arts after the UFC light heavyweight champion was notified Tuesday of his second potential violation of the promotion's anti-doping policy.

Jones is widely considered the top pound-for-pound fighter in his sport. The potential violation stems from a sample collected after his weigh-in July 28 for his title fight against Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 in Anaheim, California.

Jones (23-1) beat Cormier with a vicious third-round head kick, reclaiming his 205-pound belt after sitting out the previous year under suspension for his first failed doping test. The victory appeared to be a return to glory for a fighter who has repeatedly hindered his stellar career with misbehavior outside the octagon.

Jones was stripped of his belt in 2015 after his arrest for his involvement in a hit-and-run accident. He was scheduled to fight Cormier for the title in July 2016, but was pulled from the UFC 200 card and eventually suspended for what he claimed was a failed test due to a sexual enhancement pill.

Last month, the 30-year-old Jones emphatically denied he has ever used performance-enhancing drugs.

Jones hasn't yet been stripped of his light heavyweight title for a second time, but it will be a formality if the doping violation is confirmed. Cormier held the belt for most of Jones' absence, and he will likely be the champion again, UFC President Dana White said.

"Jon and I have been mad at each other since UFC 200, but the reality is we've been here for this kid every step of the way," White said. "How many times did I fly to Albuquerque when he was in trouble? The list goes on and on, what we've done for this guy. It's really sad."

Jones' camp and his manager, Malki Kawa, released a statement: "We are all at a complete loss for words right now. Jon, his trainers, his nutritionists and his entire camp have worked tirelessly and meticulously the past 12 months to avoid this exact situation. We are having the samples tested again to determine the validity or source of contamination. Jon is crushed by this news and we are doing whatever we can as a team, to support him."

In a statement, Cormier said he was "disappointed" and "very emotional" about the news.

"In my mind, on July 29, I competed and I lost," said Cormier, who is on vacation in Hawaii with his family. "I thought Jon Jones was the better man that day. I don't know what to think anymore. I can't believe we are going through all of this again. We will see what happens next."

If the violation is confirmed, Jones is almost certain to face a multiyear suspension from the sport, taking away even more of his fighting prime. The UFC also will be harmed by the lengthy absence of its best fighter and a burgeoning pay-per-view draw.

The penalties for a second offense range from one to four years, depending on several aggravating or mitigating circumstances, said Jeff Novitzky, the UFC's vice president of athlete health and performance.

"Jon definitely has one penalty under the system," Novitzky said. "So the second penalty, if it were to come to that, basically doubles the amount of the first."

White revealed that the UFC was hoping to book Jones in a fight against heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic in Detroit later this year. Instead, two divisions have been thrown into turmoil.

The UFC also could lose its dream matchup between Jones and former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. The superstars both appeared eager to meet next year in a heavyweight fight that would be among the biggest events in the UFC's history.

"It's not over yet," White said. "He's got to go through the (legal) process. Maybe there was something crazy that happened for this stuff to get into his system. So I don't know."

USADA administers the UFC's doping policy. The California State Athletic Commission also has jurisdiction over Jones' test.

I don't agree. After losing Ronda's ppv buy ability and piss poor ppv draws lately they did an 880,000 ppv on his and DC 's last fight and the potential Lesnar/Jones superfight on the horizon Dana had his lips firmly planted on Jones' jockstrap again. Jones and McGregor are the only ca$hcows the UFC has right now. Dana will be pissed as all fuck but he didn't want him gone after that last fight. This guy had the world in his hands again, just not the brightest bulb, got two brothers in the NFL probably hooking him up without his camp knowing. Idk but UFC taking a big ppv hit on this one.

this one should be a lifetime ban. one he has one positive test and 2 it was a title fight after his nice long suspension so obviously he doesnt care. that and he should have never been allowed back after all the negative press from his hit and run and contacts with le the past couple of years

WHY? he makes LOTS of $$$$ for the company. and jones has always defended the UFC and never complained about pay or tried to start a union like some and they are still there fighting.

no, jones just has no integrity. he probably could have beaten DC without but wanted that insurance. how many times has he had wonky test/epitest ratios that were WAY out but not actually tested positive for PEDs? this was back when the testing was way less stringent.

where there is smoke there is fire, and I can barely see jon jones from the smoke around him. jones is like connor mcgregor with the UFC. they have bent over backwards to help him. jon jones gets messed up, hits a preggo lady in his car and runs away on foot after totalling his bently while drunk. then tests positive for cocaine on one of his fights and peds another and the UFC always towed the line. he has less than years suspension all together for this shit and nick diaz gets 2 years for testing positive for weed!

On July 8, 2016, a urine sample from Jones tested positive for two banned substances, prior to his scheduled championship bout with Daniel Cormier at UFC 200. The violation was from an out-of-competition sample collection on June 16, with subsequent testing of the B sample confirming the doping. As a result, Jones was forced to withdraw from the event to be replaced by former middleweight champion Anderson Silva.[185]

On July 18, 2016, the Nevada State Athletic Commission revealed Jones had tested positive for clomiphene, an anti-estrogenic substance, and letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor. These substances were found in the June 16 out-of-competition sample provided by Jones. Both drugs are on the World Anti-Doping Agency banned substances list and are described as "hormone and metabolic modulators." Additionally, both drugs are banned substances that are not allowed to be used in or out of competition.[186][187] Throughout the ordeal, Jones maintained his innocence claiming that he was the victim of a contaminated product that he believed to be Cialis, which was later independently obtained, tested and found to be contaminated by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.[188]

On November 7, 2016, it was announced that Jones was given a 1-year suspension by USADA following his arbitration hearing, though the arbitration panel concluded that Jones didn't take the banned substances intentionally and was not a drug cheat.[189]

On August 22, 2017, it was revealed Jones again was preliminarily suspended after failing a post-fight USADA drug test, this time for Turinabol, an anabolic steroid.[136]

Maybe it's tough to detect that's why a few fighters have failed for it...from what I know taking turnibol would leave quite the metabolite trail.

i think a lot of fighters who juice are totally in the dark about what's "safe" to take training for a fight that will be tested. how many times did fighters get popped for nandrolone? sean sherk, royce gracie and i may be wrong but i think tim sylvia as well. nandrolone, able to be detected in urine up to 9 months after ceasing use, not a wise choice when being tested for PEDs. if the money were better for MMA fighters you'd have "gurus" like victor conte making new designer steroids for these guys so they'd be able to skirt the tests much longer like Bonds and the boys did in baseball and football. MMA guys are too poor to use anything but what fellow gym rats tell them to use, with the exception of conor, who must have had good stuff availble to muscle up like a stud for his Diaz fight at welterwight/catchweight, huge transformation from his usual anorexic look at 145

no way in hell someone is slipping stuff into his sample like that when it comes to an oic wada or usda test. they dont play around so they pretty much never lose a court case. they watch their shit like a hawk. any tom dick or harry that took the course can do work place drug tests. that's why they lose so often in court. no control over the samples most of the time. the military is the same way. it is so easy to beat it's not even funny
