I've been wanting to get a belt of my own for quite some time now, but I've always only had the opportunity to use the leather belts with a wider back support. I've been wondering about the smaller/narrower "fabric" type belts. I mostly use belts for squats, deads, and seated military for added support.

If any of you have experience in both, which do you prefer and why? Thanks.

If I use a belt, which is now rare, I am partial to the very thick leather powerlifting belts. The same width all the way around. It does give a sense of security, especially on heavy deads and squats. I dont like the soft fabric belts. They feel flimsy.

I've never been one to use a belt Ezskanken. Ive seen and heard more positive things about the bigger leather belts

I own an Inzer Powerlifting belt and it's awesome! it's width contributes to a secure feel when doing the slow lifts (deadlift, squats, presses, etc...). If you're into powerlifting - never compromise on a belt. Best piece of equipment you can purchase - so splurge.

Additionally, I own an Eleiko leather weightlifting belt and it's fair at best. I'm not a big fan of it because the front of the belt is tapered and narrower than the back, which doesn't provide enough support and propreoseptive feedback for my heavy front/back squats. With it's use in the fast lifts (clean and jerk, snatch, and pulls, etc...), I've found the belt to be cumbersome/intrustive as the barbell inevidably hits the buckle - which total messes up my form and psyche.

I also own a fabric/nylon mesh type belt from Harbinger (red cross - not the white cross). There is a difference. The white cross Harbinger belt is complete CRAP! The velcro gives out ALOT! This is extremely dangerous when lifting heavy loads and your belt fails! Instead, purchase the Harbinger belt with the red cross - it holds up much better and the width is perfect for anyone interested in using a regulation sized belt for Olympic weightlifting events.

      Hope this helps.

on your big lifts like squats/deads you want a big thick belt...but that type of belt does not usually work for full workouts unless your really tall with a long torso. I only use my belt on squats and deads but that is my personal preference...

WOW! Thanks for all the responses guys. Yeah back in my collegiate days I guess my body was conditioned to the wear and tear of the daily grind on and off the field. If I could lift now what I was doing back then at 185, I'd be happier lol. But now that I plan on getting a lot more serious with my long term goals I don't want to risk my back for anything. I mean I can still rep 315 on squats and 405 on deads with great form, but I just rather not risk it anymore because I know those numbers will slowly increase. I just hate when all the belts are taken and then I have to lay off the heavy weight because in my mind I'm already defeated mentally.

Shucks I guess I don't know how to edit post yet, but it seems like the "wider" belts are more suited for my needs. Thanks again everyone!
