A two-year study of 420 patients with heart failure found that taking 300 mg of Q10 per day significantly reduced major adverse cardiovascular events, while cutting the death rate in half. Lead study author, Svend Aage Mortensen, MD, concluded that “CoQ10 could be considered as adjunctive treatment in heart failure.”
Numerous studies support the use of Q10 for cardiovascular health. It is particularly good at helping muscles make energy—and the heart is certainly an important muscle. Q10 has demonstrated the ability to act as an antioxidant, reduce circulatory inflammation, and boost production of friendly nitric oxide, helping the arteries relax.
No previous Q10 study had enough participants to draw conclusions about mortality risk from a controlled Q10 study. While this study shows that mortality was cut in half, it is only preliminary in nature due to only 420 patients total in the study. Certainly, a larger study is warranted. Nevertheless, the study adds to a significant body of research showing Q10 to improve cardiovascular function without side effects.
“If you can use a dietary supplement—a natural product—without any kind of adverse event it is really very useful, taking into consideration that patients with heart failure are treated with a lot of drugs,” said Aldo Maggioni, MD. “And to have something natural without side effects—without interactions with other drugs—is very important.”
