A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial has shown that supplementing elderly women (ages 64 – 79) for 16 weeks with a multiple vitamin improved the ability to retrieve information from memory. This is the latest of a number of studies showing that B vitamins are needed for optimal memory performance.
Previously, I reported that a systematic review of 10 randomized controlled trials proved that multivitamins help with information recall. This is the latest study to show the importance of B vitamins for memory.
I also reported that B12 and folic acid help boost memory in stressed adults and a lack of B12 is actually associated with brain shrinkage in adults. When B vitamins are lacking, the plaque tangles in the brain, which are associated with Alzheimer’s disease, are more likely to accumulate.
