A new study restricted vitamin B6 intake for 28 days in healthy adult men and women, creating a slight deficiency. Doing so lowered the DHA content in cell membranes. This study shows that vitamin B6 is needed to help DHA get where it needs to go; and even a slight deficiency can cause problems.
B vitamins are essential for many aspects of human metabolism, especially energy production and memory. DHA is also one of the most important nutrients for memory, but it must get built into brain cell membranes before it can really help out. Vitamin B6 is likely to help.
Since DHA in the membranes of cells in the circulatory system is important for cardiovascular health, researchers concluded there could be “elevated risk of cardiovascular disease in vitamin B6 insufficiency.”
