Before NY passed the new law requiring a permit for semi-auto rifles I purchased and AR15 and have taken it to the range twice since. My son (13 1/2) was a little intimidated by it so I rented him a Ruger 10/22 and he loved it. He is in the navy sea cadets and has applied for marksman training in New Hampshire on oct 22nd. When we were as the range the owner watched him load the mag, insert it into the mag well, check for a Misload and then fire as if he had done it quite a bit. The owner remarked “you can tell he has had safety training”. It was a very proud dad moment as he really learned just from watching a lot of YouTube videos and military movies and really wants to be a soldier. He wants to try a bolt action rifle next before we buy him anything. He is very into the WWII era and especially those firearms. My grandfather was a World War II vet and my son loved listening to his stories. Before my grandfather passed he gave my son his Purple Heart. It is really one of his most prized possessions.

I am a huge fan of John wick which led me to terms taractical. I would love to be able to practice three gun competition shooting. Another reason I need to leave NY. We really don’t have anything like that around here.

We are into airsoft and have played games with friends a few times at an indoor park. This weekend there is a flea market at the near by outdoor park amd we are going to inquire about playing there with a team of 8. We have a lot of practicing to do to work as a team(so far we played 4 on 4 but it was totally uncoordinated). My son actually wants to practice some tactics in the back yard after work today. It has been a great bonding experience for us.

i have done shooting comps and air soft as well as paintball. love it all but man it is a super expensive hobby for sure. i got sponsored one year and got to go down to orlando for the international swat comp years ago. i did that one and the international special ops round up. did pretty well at both and was offered jobs at various police departments when i retired from the military. i love shooting.

I did force on force simunition training before. You use real pistols and rifles. (Glock 17 and AR15) Both have been made so they CANNOT accept any cartridge other than the sim. It shoots little projectile markers at between 300-650. The AR ones hurt like the devil!

We did class room training then tactical training in the shoot house. Then we had 2 man teams and went head to head. I died every time, but every other guy in my class was either former military or police and it was my first experience with it. I was at 1 kill for every 5 deaths with AR 15 and never got a kill with pistol.

I say that to say this, it is absolutely the BEST way to learn to be a tactical shooter. Sure 3 gun or other shooting sports will make you good but until you can do it under fire all that skill is diminished. In MMA we say a blackbelt in BJJ turns into a white belt when he starts getting punched in the face.

Fine a school that uses sims. You will not regret it...well the first time you get hit in a tender spot you will but then when the sting goes away you will want to do it again.

Thanks for the replies guys. I just picked up a like new chest rig at the flea market for $20. It’s not a plate carrier and it didn’t come with any extra pouches but I’m fine with that as I didn’t want to dump $130 in on a rig right off the bat. We already have dumped a ton in(all my fault). My son and I both have m4s. He also has an ak with a folding stock and plastic hardware. Then he has an ak with all wood furniture. Since he is a big WWII buff he wanted a P38 Luger. His last purchase was a glock 19. The only other airsoft gun I have is a taran tactical licenses 2011 like the one in John Wick 3. It is a gas blow back too which is neat. I did add a tracer to my m4 which is cool as hell for our indoor games. We haven’t played outside yet so I don’t know how well it will work unless we play at dusk. I also swapped the sig sauer Romeo green dot from my AR over to the m4 and I took the scope from my airsoft and put it on the AR. I have a sling and a vertical grip on the airsoft gun. We plan to join a big game at the outdoor field at the end of the month.

Cool man. Airsoft will teach you well. If you can get an airsoft coach it should translate to real firearms pretty well.

When you say AK and M4 you are talking airsoft or bang bang?

i used simuntion in training for cgb and other skills in the military as well as in swat school and other applications. i have attended swat schools in various cities as well as gunsite, black water(when they were still blackwater, triple canopy and a host of other schools. other than actually being directly in combat their is no substitute for that type of training. the gunslinger rambos disappear real quick when the simms come out.
i cant remember which school it was but they had us strip down to nothing but pants and face protection and stand 15 yards apart and face away from each other. when the command was given you spun and engaged each other. first hit was a win. the instructors told us the story of an fbi dumb ass that got into an elevator with a wanted man and once they both realized that one was a cop and the other a bad guy they engaged and fired off something like 45 rounds at each other without a single hit and ran dry ending in unarmed combat. they beat into us that he who is calm and smooth is fast and wins the gun battle every time. being shirtless and getting shot with those damn things offers a whole other level of stress haha. slow is smooth smooth is fast still rings in my mind to this day.
another cool story for me while i was in iraq patrolling along in a city. i was walking point because my point man had an issue with his gps so i moved from the back to the front. well a dude pops out and engages me and i of course engage back. my weapon only fired one shot and malfunctioned because the suppressor dried the bolt out. so it was observe the bolt tap rack bang for about 3 shots before it clicked that i needed to take cover and fix the situation. after the engagement was over and we had went back to debrief, it clicked in my mind that i did all of that without a bit of hesitation or thinking, it was automatic. just like getting into an engagement in a building before moving to the next room or whathaveyou, you automatically put a fresh mag in without even thuinking so you dont run dry if you get into another one.
i will say that i recieved a shit ton more training than normal marines do because of the job and some of the positions i held. so what i did is not normal even though the training for normal guys is pretty good

Vinny picked up this sniper rifle at the flea market. He also got a Vietnam era M16/M4. I didn’t grab a photo of that one and he has it in his room this morning. We got all three weapons for $100. The SAW goes for $300 brand new. I thought for sure non e of these guns would have the batteries but the SAW did and the sniper rifle is just spring activated after you pull the bolt back. The M16 didn’t have its battery but one of the others I had worked in it. So we just need one 7.4v lipo and we are good to go. Oh and I need a 9v for the SAW to power the electronic feed from the box. I plan on hooking a gopro either onto my gun rail or on a helmet mount to get some
      videos.

Crazy story guns. Our instructors told us the same thing. slow and smooth= fast. The other thing is 1 is none and 2 is 1.

We did duel training like what you did. Walk out 10 paces with your backs turned. When the instructor shouted go, we turned and fired. In our group very few guys did not get hit. But we did not do it shirtless although my first time I work a tshirt. After that I used a starched Carhartt long sleeve HD shirt and cargo pants. Stiff as hell but took about 1/2 off the sims.

Oh, always wear groin protection HAHA

CE, those are cool. how many fps will those fire at?

the groin pro that hangs off your vest is no bueno man. as soon as i got to the school house i learned real quick that a jock strap and cup where a must. on ships, in jails and other super confined spaces you get shot all over the place haha. ships and jails are the worse because the sim rounds travel down the walls and dont get absorbed like a normal structure. one of the ways we evaluated our students is how many shots we took to our hands. if you have lots of hits to your hands it means your students are shooting center mass and following proper principles.
another aspect they learn real quick is angles and inches inside of structures. just because you cant see the bad guys and dont think your exposed doesnt mean they cant see and engage you. if i can see your feet i can put you out of the fight haha. man, i miss that stuff so bad. i have done it with mp5s m4s m16s pistols revolvers hell pretty much any weapon that can be converted. and the all hurt like hell.
talking about wearing carharts. we wore flight suits with soft body armor and sweat shirts even in 100 degree heat. we would just rotate instructors to keep from being heat cases
