Zinc, like magnesium, is a powerful anti-inflammatory mineral. It is important at every age, especially during aging, to prevent the onset of the inflammatory diseases of aging and improve the ability of one’s body to effectively combat infections. A new study focuses on the importance of zinc for optimal immune function during the aging process.

The new science shows that just about every different type of immune cell requires zinc for its internal communication processes. This means that if you are lacking zinc then your immune cells don’t process information correctly, resulting in faulty decision making. The new research shows that this contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation, the hallmark of every disease of aging. It also causes a reduction in immune system competence for important jobs, like fighting infection.

Dietary zinc is highest in red meat. Whole grain, a generally nutritious food, can reduce the absorption of zinc. Zinc is used up at a faster pace by high stress and is lost in your sweat when you exercise. Zinc is required for healthy sex hormone function and sex drive. Some women may need up to 50 mg of zinc per day for optimal immune function, whereas some men may need up to 100 mg, especially if they exercise a lot.

People with ongoing health issues of chronic low-grade inflammation or susceptible to catching bugs easily should consider boosting their zinc intake as part of their approach to improving their health. This is especially important the older you get.
