Magnesium is required for the function of several hundred key enzymes that have a dramatic impact on the quality of health. A new study in 171 healthy post-menopausal women found them to be lacking in magnesium, with deficiencies worsening in relation to the time of their last menstrual cycle.

We already know that most people lack magnesium. This study is just one more that demonstrates the point. However, the fact that levels are low in healthy older women is somewhat surprising as is the finding that the levels grew continually the longer it had been since they stopped having menstrual cycles.

Magnesium is vital to cardiovascular health, brain health, and inflammation reduction. Running low on this mineral as one ages would certainly increase the risk for poor health.

Most people don’t come close to the recommended amount of 400 mg of magnesium in their diets, an amount that is too low if you are also under stress (magnesium is used up by stress) or exercise a lot (magnesium is lost in sweat).

Supplemental magnesium intake ranging from 400 mg to 800 mg per day is ideal. I would stay away from cheap forms of magnesium supplements like magnesium oxide, as the oxides use up some of your antioxidants.
