I have a buddy that works on the local SWAT team and he has always taught a carry permit class. Well, I didn't realize that he used to teach a tactical class as well. He says that he is going to start that back up next year. I can't wait to take this class!! I had looked around for a local class and the closest ones were a good drive away. He is about 20 minutes away.

The only thing is I have a Glock 40 model 27 which has quite a bit of recoil. It makes it tough to make multiple shots with a lot of accuracy (at least for me right now it does because I haven't practiced with it much lately). I am thinking about picking up a Ruger LC9 before taking the class. I was planning on broadening my variety of guns anyway. What do you guys think? It would be much easier as far as a tactical class goes.

ruger makes a good pistol. look at the beretta PX4 storm. it has a rotating barrel that reduces recoil by 15-20% and i bought a CZ SP01 which has the slide inside the frame which creates a very low barrel axis. it pushes almost straight back so you stay on target. i also got a 9mm. +P and +P+ ammo is very hot and has similar ballistics to a .40.

i shot my buddies springer XDm and really liked it.

i would love to do a tactical class. too much $$$

I went to my buddy's (the guy that teaches the class) house last night for New Years and he showed me a new way to grip my 40. He said that I needed to try this grip if I thought the recoil was a problem. After trying the grip just standing there (no shots), it already felt WAY more solid. I'm going to give that a try before buying a 9. I'll probably still get one in the future, but I would rather spend the money on an AK next.

which grip did he show you? a good teacher can always improve even the best shooter. of course with guys like us the changes will be very noticeable while a good shooter much less.

good luck i hope it works out where this solves your prob.

It's kind of hard to explain. I'll take some pics tonight and load them up...that will do it more justice. He didn't necessarily call it anything. You may already know it once you see it, but it was new to me. I still haven't had a chance to shoot. But I found out that a local guy just leased the old police shooting range (about 10 minutes from my house) and you can buy memberships to use it. That is GREAT for us.

I'll get those pics tonight. I got busy last night. Also, I called about the shooting range and there are no memberships. It costs 10 per hour to use it. I think I am just going to get my dad to bring me two big loads of dirt for a back stop. Then I'll build me a wooden frame to hang a silhouette on. We are in the county so it shouldn't make much of a difference. I asked my swat buddy about it and he said it shouldn't be a problem.

I'll get some pics of this grip tonight. We have been crazy busy at work!! I worked like 20 days in a row or something like that. Also, the tactical class is this saturday. It's only 50.00! He says we will go through around 350 rounds. Shooting at single targets up to 3 or 4. From kneeling, standing, laying down. What to do when a jam occurs...etc....About a 4 hour class.

We had our class yesterday. It was about 27* and snowing! But we stayed out there for about 4 hours. It was a really good class. I learned quite a bit. We learned the proper position to shoot from standing, kneeling, prone, behind cover, around corners, close range (like 3 feet) with someone trying to hit you with something, shooting after being knocked to the ground, walking in, walking out, walking parallel to the target, one handed strong side, one handed support hand, from 7, 15, and 25 yards, and we went through some malfunction drills and tactical loads. I did pretty good considering I haven't shot much in the past 2 years. I had a nice little group from every position, but they were a bit off target. Mostly high left it looked like(when I say high left, they were still hitting the triangle part of the target, just high and left of the center). I actually figured I would be shooting low because I have the tendency to not squeeze the trigger which causes me to shoot low. The worst part of the whole thing was the one handed support hand side (my left, I am right handed). It was obviously terrible because I never shoot like that. I was truly hilarious.

Best part was my buddy only charged me 40.00! We went through about 250 rounds before running out of time.
