Joe Dante's mini-monster hit was a cultural touchstone of the 80s that still lives onthrough nostalgia. Unfortunately, it’s routinely forgotten as a Christmas moviebecause it wasn't too kind to the holiday. It’s a great flick for anyone in the moodfor a little Xmas bashing. After all, Gizmo the Mogwai just might be the worst Christmasgift ever given. Sure, he's a cute little guy, but once water caused him to shoot out someGremlin offspring, well, the holiday season was ruined for one idyllic small town. The little monsters ran amuck on Christmas Eve, killing old ladies, attackingSanta and posing as carolers. Then, to top things off, there's <ahref="https://www.askmen.com/celebs/women/actress_200/213_phoebe_cates.html"target="_self">Phoebe Cates' darkly hilarious monologue in which she recalls atragic Christmas morning when her father tried to climb down the chimney dressed as Santaand died. Though remembered as a children’s classic, Dante's movie is actually quitea subversive dark comedy and a perfect antidote to holiday overload for the entirefamily… or for lonely, nostalgic children of the '80s.
