TweetWe had a make-up travel soccer game this past Saturday in Newark, NJ. As we're driving through the back streets of Newark, I'm thinking to myself "Wow, what a bad ass area to live in". We pull up to the field and i'm talking to one of the parents who is a cop. He says this area is considered a war zone for crime. In fact, they had a full time police car parked at the field. The field itself was absolutely beautiful. All turf, built in bleachers, rubber track and the works. From what i understand, Essex county put mucho dollars into all the fields and it shows. But, just like anything else. Put something nice in a bad area and it won't be nice for long. Already showed in that the goals were all busted, there was all sorts of trash on the field. Was looking for a syringe to be found somewhere. Because of all this, the other team was going to forfiet cause we just couldn't play. Fortuntely a few block away was another field we could use. Here we go driving through the back streets in amazement of the poor surroundings. Until yet again we pull up to the field. Again, absolutely beautiful and in tact to play. This field was surrounded by several apartment buildings, the projects.
About 10 min into the game and at our goal, there started to be a gathering of people creating a distraction for my goalie as they were creeping on the field. The ref stops the game and goes to talk to the group. They move off the field. A few minutes go by, more riff raff shows us and, again, they come onto the field. Again the ref stops the game a goes to talk to them. This time the opposing coach goes as well. Some yelling and finger pointed came from the crowd and i see the ref run back to her bag, pull her cell phone out and call someone. I ask the other ref waht happened. She told us the Riff Raff threatened to kill the ref if she did not stop asking them to leave. Is that freakin unbeleiveable! Well, the cops never showed. fortunately, there were now 2 parents who were police officers. They flashed their badges and the crowd moved back but did not leave. OMG, this was supposed to be a soccer game for 10 yr olds. Such animals!!
