That’s right: You officially have a legitimate excuse to stop shaving. Starting September 1, the folks behind the foundation Septembeard are urging men everywhere to sport beards for the entire month in support of prostate cancer research.

So if you’ve ever wanted to let your beard run rampant but were too afraid of what your wife might do to you, worry no more. After all, she can’t complain about your furry face when it’s for a good cause.

Art Wagner, a veteran marketing executive and recent prostate cancer survivor, formed Septembeard to drum up support for more research on one of the deadliest man killers. (It’s the second-leading cause of cancer death in American men, claiming over 33,000 lives this year.)

“After being diagnosed with prostate cancer, I was really lucky that I just happened to have a great team of doctors on my side to help me beat it, but how many other guys don’t have the same help? I just felt obligated to give back,” Wagner says.

Serendipitously, this was right around the time that Wagner’s hometown team, the San Francisco Giants, was riding the notorious beard of closer Brian Wilson all the way to the 2010 World Series. Thus, Septembeard was born.

“I’ve never grown a beard in my life. I know people are going to come up to me and ask me what’s up with the beard, and that’ll be the perfect opportunity to talk to them about it and ask for donations,” Wagner says.

Here’s how to get involved: Sign up by yourself or form a team with other wanna-beards and refer your friends and family to your unique Septembeard page, where they can track your beard’s progress. That’s where they can also donate to the top 6 prostate cancer research centers and hospitals in the country. Throughout the month, you’ll be able to check how you or your team stacks up against other top beard-growers in America.

So why should you ditch the razor this month? “The number of prostate cancer deaths and breast cancer deaths in this country are very similar on a yearly basis, but breast cancer funding and research is more than double that of prostate cancer. It’s time for guys to stand up for something that directly affects their personal health,” Wagner says.

Gentlemen, let the beards begin.
