TweetMove over, aspirin. A new study suggests that a daily dose of pomegranate juice may be the all-natural answer to easing muscle soreness and recovering faster. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin had volunteers drink either the 8 ounces of pomegranate juice or a placebo. Then the subjects lifted heavy weights.
The men who drank pomegranate juice experienced 25 percent less soreness 2 hours later, says lead study author Edward F. Coyle, Ph.D., F.A.S.C.M. After 48 hours, their strength was 10 percent greater than the placebo group.
Experts aren’t sure why pomegranate takes the sting out of strength training, but suspect it’s because the fruit is packed with the potent plant antioxidant ellegitannin that protect muscle fibers from damage.
Follow-up research shows that guys who pump iron regularly also get the same body benefit from the juice. Aim for about 8 ounces daily to ouch less
