TweetReaching for an apple instead of chips may feel righteous at the time but cause you to lash out later, suggests a new study slated for publication in the Journal of Consumer Research.
In one of the study’s experiments, people had to pick an apple or chocolate, then they were asked to choose between two movies with the same star but “happy” or “angry” themes: think Adam Sandler in either Billy Madison or Anger Management. People who chose the apple were more likely to choose Anger Management. Other experiments in the study backed up the findings: When people make a wise or restrained choice, their subsequent reactions are more angry than people who gave in to their impulses.
Why does showing restraint seem to shorten our fuse? A growing body of research suggests that willpower might be a limited resource, the study authors say. Once it’s tapped, we may lose control more easily.
So what do you do if you want to build your abs and maintain your cool? First, make sure you’re not depriving yourself of everything. Go ahead and have the chocolate every now and then, says David Grotto, RD, LDN, author of 101 Optimal Life Foods and 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life! “Our relationship with food goes beyond sustenance. It’s about enjoyment,” he explains. “It’s no longer good food/bad food. Don’t gut the diet so you don’t feel deprived.”
Another strategy: Feed your brain with healthy, calming foods. There are an abundance of nutrients found in food that can support mental wellbeing and stress reduction—which can go a long way toward curbing anger.
Grotto suggests eating these foods every day:
Omega-3 fatty acids. Grotto says foods containing omega-3s fight depression and promote overall mental wellness. Primarily that’s fatty fish (salmon, tuna, sardines, anchovies) and a high-quality omega-3 supplement daily. (Here’s why fish are the secret to the Get-Happy Diet.
Magnesium. Magnesium is nature’s stress-reduction mineral. For food sources, look to dark, leafy greens.
Theonine. Green and black tea both contain theonine, says Grotto, another nutrient being shown by new research to produce calm feelings—“and a slimmer waistline,” he adds.
Melatonin. Because lack of sleep can also make you hate the world, Grotto notes foods that contain the sleep-regulating hormone melatonin are also helpful. “Walnuts and cherries are a great source of melatonin. Have a handful before bed and you’ll be happier in the morning.”

TweetMakes sense.
I wonder if some people have an angry gene or something. My gawd I know people who seem to be pissed off about 24/7. Then you get people who take PEDs and use it as an excuse to be surly and mad at the world. Then they get on a restricted diet and become totally unreal to be around. Those people should NEVER do a body building competition because then they really start losing it. Eat a &%$#ING pizza and quit bein an asshole...LOL
