A small town fire company in Tennessee that responded to a house fire was ordered to let the structure burn down because the owner had not paid the $75 subscription fee. Fire fighters across East Tennessee expressed their anger over the fire department’s decision to let the double wide trailer burn down because dues had not been paid. Three dogs died in the fire.

Images on television show the firefighters sitting in their fire trucks while the home of Gene and Paulette Cranick burns to the ground. Cranick said in television interviews that he told firefighters he forgot to pay his dues and would pay them after the firefighters put the blaze out. Doug McClanahan said “Truly, a firefighter cannot stand by and watch something burn to the ground.” McClanahan, chief of the Blount County ire Department, said a fire fighter is trained to take care of and rescue people, and “He can’t stand by and not try to react to a fire or a rescue.” Steve Wheeler, chief of Vonore, Tennessee Fire Department, said “We don’t particularly care who’s paid his dues. If somebody needs help, we help and worry about everything else later.”

Paulette Cranton, 67, said she does not blame the firefighters for not putting out the fire because they were just following orders. She said she is just thankful no one was hurt.

Tweetyea, i read abou tthis....its pretty fuked up. i dont think firfighters should be worring about who's paid there dues and who hasnt. i think the county or township should pay them and fine him and/or place a lien on the property for failure to pay. the firefighters should do their job regardless.....

TweetI think it's absolutely ridiculous! I understand the man had not paid his 75.00, but from what I understand, he had paid every year before then and had just forgotten this year. IMO, it is the firefighters duty to save lives and not sit back and watch a house burn without lifting a hose. I understand that their boss told them no, but if I were a firefighter in that position...I would have put the fire out and dealt with the consequences later.

Many other stations have said they would have fought the fire and then sent him a bill for 75.00. It just kills me that this kind of crap happens now. What if the man had been in the house and couldn't get out? Would they have sit there and watched him burn to death over 75.00?

I guess there are no morals anymore.

TweetI can see both sides of the story. I mean, if you save his house, then no one in the community will pay the 75.00 and they will expect the same service if their house catches on fire. I guess you have to draw the line somewhere. But they could at least save the place, and then send the guy a bill for the "real cost" of saving the house if they were that worried about the 75.00.

Would the firefighters insurance cover them if they had worked the fire and say one of them had gotten hurt in the process? Or would the firefighter be out the medical bills in this situation, since the house wasn't covered?

Tweeti bet the insurance would cover...noway they got a rider that says "the home owner of the place in question must be paid to date with taxes and fees!"....fuk...they would have to pour over county records before each fire!!
that was bullshyt...put a lean on his property!!! you cant just watch the shyt burn and his animals die!! c'mon!!! fukin morons!!!

TweetIf he didn't pay, they could always have just sent him a bill for the emergency services rendered since he's not in contract with them. They do that here in hurricanes now. Its your choice to leave, but if you stay and have to be rescued you will get a bill.
