My step son is going to be 9 in January and I want to get him a four wheeler for Christmas. He has had a 90cc at his dad's for 2 years. What size do you think would be good? I have ridden all my life (used to race them and dirt bikes) so I know how to ride. I don't want to get him anything that will get too little too fast. I am thinking a 125cc maybe and let him grow into it.

My first 4 wheeler was a 125 when I was 13, then moved up to a 250 a year or so later because it was too damn small. That goes for my younger cousin too, whom was about 8 or 9 at the time, except the 125 was plenty for her.

Well, I'm thinking about an older 200 or so. That way he can grow into it and it's big enough for us to use around the house too. I can govern it down as far as speed.

My first was a honda big red three wheeler. Don't see how I'm not dead or paralyzed lol. I think the older 200 is a good idea if you can limit the throttle.

So I went to the local dealership today and the four wheelers are bigger than they used to be. They have a Yamaha Raptor 90cc that is pretty good sized. It looks cool too! The next step up is a 125 but it is a 5spd with a clutch and I don't really think he's ready for that just yet. So now I'm thinking it will be between the 90 and 125. The smaller ones have more power than they used to as well, so I'm not as worried about getting a smaller cc

I went back to the dealer last Friday and as I was talking with the guy, they rolled a brand new 2011 Raptor 90cc straight off the truck. He made me a price on it and I jumped on my Iphone to search prices. I couldn't find anything any cheaper, so I bought it. Man these things look so good!!! They look like a straight up race bike for a kid. It is automatic so he won't have to full with gears right now and it is supposed to run 35mph. The size and power are plenty for him right now. I searched and searched and couldn't find a used one and all of the 2010 models were gone by the time I called (these things are selling like hot cakes). I feel pretty good about the brand new one. It has the warranty and there won't be any quirky crap going on. Jacob can just hop on it and let her eat!!

I did a layaway thing where they hold it until December 22, so I don't have to worry about hiding it long. I can't wait to see his face!!! He has never had anything new like this. We are going to get him some Fox Racing riding gear as well....he is CRAZY about Fox! Then we are going to cover it up with the grille cover and have him do a scavenger hunt through the house on Christmas which will lead him to the four wheeler. It's going to be great! But he deserves it....he is a good kid. I have wanted to get him one for the past 2 years but the funds just have allowed it.

On a side note, after Christmas, I think I am going to get myself back on a dirt bike to ride with him. I am thinking I'll probably get me a yz250f. I think that will be a great trail/mx bike

One thing to think of is size and weight. If he is a big 9 year old then yeah a bigger one like a old 200. But if he is smaller then go a little smaller . If he gets in an accident you want him to be able to get it off of him, or for the most part control it. Speed can be limited on all of them. Speed isn't always the killer.

That's pretty much what I did. He is going to be 9 in January but he is on the small size. He is probably 4ft tall and about 65lbs...I think

I would try to find one in the middle around 150cc . You can find them used at a good price and that way he can control it better and if you guys ride together you will not have to get off as much to help him get it down some trails. I seen a guys 7 year old take a 125 all over West Point, TN and only had to help in in the bad areas.

I ended up buying him a new Raptor 90cc. It is pretty big compared to his old one. The next step up was a 125 which had gears and a clutch and he isn't ready for that just yet. I looked all over my area for a bigger four wheeler like I was referring to earlier and could not find anything (except for a few pieces of crap). I think with this four wheeler, he will be a little more confident and will spend more time learning how to ride instead of being afraid of the power and size. I think this is a good choice after some consideration about Jacob's personality. For instance, he has two bikes. One is a bigger bike that he can ride no problems. His old bike is a small kid's bike...but he always ends up riding it because he can do tricks and what not on it where the other one is a bit too big for that. This is what really got me thinking about which one he would like the best. We will see....the good thing with the new one is I can get the majority of my money back if I have to sell it because he gets too big.
