In a blockbuster development that will have far-reaching ramifications for both the way we view one of the biggest fights of 2010 and the potential for a rematch of that fight in 2011, Chael Sonnen has reportedly been informed that he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs after his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117.

Sonnen will presumably be suspended, and a second middleweight title fight between Sonnen and Silva -- which undoubtedly would have been among the biggest fights for the UFC next year -- may need to be scrapped.

"[Sonnen] received his notice yesterday," California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd told Sherdog.com.

There is no word on which banned substance Sonnen took, but it was reportedly a performance-enhancing substance and not a drug of abuse.

Sonnen, who gained widespread attention for his constant trash talk leading up to the fight with Silva, has not commented on the story. But there's no doubt that this will change his reputation among MMA fans. Sonnen was viewed after fighting Silva as the hard-nosed fighter who took it to the UFC's most unbeatable champion for five rounds, and even though Sonnen did tap out in the fifth round, he was widely acclaimed for the way he dominated Silva for 22 minutes leading up to that submission. Now he'll be viewed as a cheater.

More details emerge on the Chael Sonnen drug saga as George Dodd, the CSAC official that first alerted the media on the failed drug test, talked to Lance Pugmire of the LA Times, and said that Chael tested positive for a "natural steroid", and it happened on his pre-fight drug test:

Chael Sonnen, the brash Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight contender who nearly defeated champion Anderson Silva in August, tested positive for a steroid before the fight in Oakland and faces a year-long suspension, California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd said Sunday.

Sonnen will have 30 days to appeal his suspension and $2,500 fine, said Dodd, clouding UFC plans for a Sonnen-Silva rematch early next year in Nevada... Dodd said Sonnen’s positive test emerged from a urine sample he gave before the fight that was processed through the UCLA Olympic drug-testing lab.

In Stephan Bonnar's last fight joe rogan talked about how good he looked after such a long layoff, but left out the part that a year of that long layoff was a suspension for testing positive for steroids. Same for Chris Leben, love that dude but seems disingenuous to be singing praises about how he's climbing the ladder and making a name for himself again winning two fights in two weeks time. He was suspended after testing positive for winny after his fight with Bisping. He's looker harder and more cut his last two fights. what's a side effect of steroid use? a positive one i mean....recuperating quicker from intense workouts? how many fighers could fight their ass off in the cage and be ready to step back in inside two weeks? and win in impressive fashion? but he's smart, he doesn't get diarhea of the mouth and talk shyt like Sonnen, Bonnar didn't do any more attention seeking than other fighters, even Royce Gracie has for the most part been given a pass for his testing positive for nandrolone awhile back, Chael called out everyone and their mother during the prefight hype last fight. the average fan who doesn't understand the slight advantage steroids impart to a fighter will assume all his technical skill and control of Silva was all due to his steroid use,allegedly, even if it was a natural occuring one. his rep is going ti take a big hit on this i think.

According to a report by Sports Illustrated's Josh Gross, Sonnen indicated to California State Athletic Commission officials who administered his pre-fight drug screening urinalysis that he had taken a banned substance that might show up in the test.

That's pretty much the nail in the coffin of his UFC career if true, but Chael being Chael will likely blame it on this guy with the Hispanic accent who has been impersonating him in interviews:

What I can't wrap my mind around is, why would he bring the heat on himself like that? You can bet that CSAC told the testing lab to make sure they "take a long hard look at that Republican's piss under the microscope."

Here's what CSAC executive director George Dodd told Gross went down the day before Sonnen's career defining fight with Anderson Silva.


"He only indicated that he was taking it but he never indicated why," Dodd said of a conversation he and Sonnen shared during drug testing conducted by the state a day prior to the fight. Sonnen "just let me know he was taking [something] and that's when I called over an inspector to get it documented. But when you do take it you still have to show a medical reason."

So let me get this straight, Sonnen admitted he cheated prior to the bout, yet he was still licensed to fight? I'm just as baffled by the decision made by CSAC to allow him to compete than I am by Chael's decision to possibly throw away his UFC career.

Would they have still allowed the fight to go on if it was, say PCP, speed or cocaine?

If I was Anderson Silva's camp, I would be pissed that the commission allowed Sonnen to go into the Octagon with an illegal edge like he had.

Here's Dodd's explanation of why they need to know the reason that a fighter has been taking a banned substance as they can confer with commission physicians on whether or not it was used to enhance performance.

"Whenever you're taking an enhancing drug you have to let the commission know prior to even taking the test that you're taking, and what the medical reasons are why you're taking the drug," Dodd said. "That way we can verify with our commission doctors that the reason you're taking that is the reason you should be on that type of drug. You can't just come in and say, 'Hey, I'm taking this,' and think that's going to get you off."

That's why when Karo Parisyan listed the prescribed medication he had been taking for a back and hip injury didn't jive with the ones in his blood that he didn't have a script for, there was a problem.

The thing is, why, when he admitted he took the PED and didn't have a legit reason for taking it that would excuse him from being punished for the infraction, was he allowed in the Octagon?

CSAC, of all commissions, given its propensity for controversy should not walk away from this fiasco scot-free. I smell an inquiry.

Chael Sonnen, despite losing in his bid to take the title from middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117 in Oakland, had earned the respect of many for taking Silva into deeper waters than any other fighter in the UFC before him.

Slightly over a month later and Sonnen finds himself in deep water, failing his drug test for performance enhancing substances.
