TweetChicago's newly minted handgun regulation law goes into effect today, less than a month after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the city's ban on handguns.
The new ordinance bans gun shops in Chicago and prohibits gun owners from stepping outside their homes, even onto their porches or in their garages, with a handgun.
Lawsuits have already been filed by a man who wants to open a gun shop in Lincoln Park, and by four residents along with a gun sellers group. They claim the ordinance is unconstitutional.
The Supreme Court ruled in June that Americans have the right to have handguns for self-defense. The ruling effectively made the city's 28-year-old gun ban unenforceable.
Starting today, anyone who wants to get a handgun must obtain a Chicago firearm permit. People who have committed violent crimes, or have two or more convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, will not be allowed permits.
Key provisions of the ordinance include:
•Firearm sales will be banned in the city.
•Gun training totaling four hours in a classroom and an hour on a firing range will be required before getting a permit. But firing ranges are banned, so training must be completed outside Chicago.
•To transport a gun, it will have to be "broken down," not immediately accessible, unloaded, and in a firearm case.
•Firearms may be possessed only inside the dwelling. It will be illegal to have a gun in the garage, on the front porch or in the yard. Guns also will not be allowed in hotels, dorms and group-living facilities.

TweetSome headway for people of Chicago. some.
Chicago politicians must be the worst. They own firearms, so they must understand the importance of the 2nd Amendment! They know damn well that your best line of home and self defense is a firearm. Firearms are your best guarantor of family protection and freedom. Otherwise, the bad-guys can take all that's dear to a family man, including his freedom. *edit; oh, and his life too.
So, the Supreme Court strikes down Chicago's unconstitutional firearms ban. Yay! You're free to legally possess the most effective means of home-defense!...er...not so fast. Chicago has umpteen loopholes punches through that ever so important section of Rights. Not only do you have to jump through all the flaming hoops they've set up for you, but once you've completed the circus-act, you will only be capable do defend your family inside your home. The garage, where so many incidents happen. You're out of gas. The back-yard, the usual break-in entry and exit...no-go. You're dead-meat in those areas.
Now the attorneys for The Constitution have to tackle these damn loopholes that the Chicago politicians have set-up. 1 big step forward though! The ban, struck down by The Supreme Court.
I read about all those loopholes, and what it takes in Chicago just to own a gun in your home. The process takes so long that you have to begin the next year's registration process no later than 3 months after you just completed the current registration. Wait, I think that's New York. Chicago's registration process must begin immediately after the current one, or you'll miss the deadline. Then, once a firearm has missed a registration in Chicago, it is deemed illegal and can never be registered in the state of IL again. A few years ago. A Chicago politician, which happens to be a gun collector, missed his registration of his dear collection of firearms. That year, there was an exception to Chicago's registration laws. So everyone that happened to miss registration that year, got to take advantage of an unprecedented firearms registration extension.

TweetChicago is pathetic, but I will never live there so I guess it doesn't matter what I think of the city. Crime will go down somewhat because of the new law, depending on how they react in the courts to people who use their guns to protect their homes and loved ones. The fact that you can't have your gun in the garage is ridiculous and totalitarian. The fact that the city of Chicago believes they have the right to tell you where in your home you can store your gun is flat out bs. Some people like to keep their guns in the garage away from their kids, but not in Chicago. So you own your home and own your gun but you can't keep your gun in your home. Wow! What a city. I feel sorry for those who live in that communist town. This makes sense of the fact that all of the politicians out of Chicago are communists.
