Fast-rising UFC heavyweight contender Junior Dos Santos is considering following in the footsteps of his training partner and South American boxing champion Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by stepping into the boxing ring in the near future to compete.
Dos Santos, who is currently stuck in a holding pattern waiting to find out who he will be matched up against next, may try his hands at the sweet science in the interim. A report by Tatame today reveals that "Cigano" was slated to make his boxing debut in early 2010, but the bout was postponed due to his back-to-back UFC bouts against Gilbert Yvel and Gabriel Gonzaga.
According to Dos Santos' boxing trainer Carlos Dorea, who also trains several Brazilian national boxing team champions, Junior was not out of place when sparring with any of the more seasoned boxers he works with and he says that he expects him to go far in the sport.
"The first step would [have been] the Brazilian championship, after he beat Cro Cop. He was the super heavy holder of the Bahia’s team, but UFC scheduled his fight with Gilbert Yvel, so I had to take him off the team”, explains Dórea, confident that the UFC’s athlete talent could bring Olympic medals to Brazil. “His evolving is fantastic, he has one of the best boxing techniques of international MMA. If everything goes right, he will compete on this area and, who knows, in the future he can bring a few medals to Brazil… He is a phenomenon."
