Former lightweight champion BJ ‘The Prodigy’ Penn (15-6-1) had originally stated intentions to move up in weight following UFC 112, but after relinquishing his long-held championship belt to Frankie ‘The Answer’ Edgar (12-1-0) in Abu Dhabi Saturday night, the Hawaiian sensation is now talking about an immediate rematch with Edgar, which would certainly take place at 155lbs. During a radio interview with 106.7 The Fan in Washington, DC, Penn claims he has already been approached by UFC about a Penn vs Edgar II, saying:
“The UFC contacted us yesterday, and I think they want to put a rematch together, so I think a rematch is in the works, I think the next three months, four months at the most.”
Should such a bout take place it would be an enormous insult to top lightweight contender Gray Maynard (9-1-0) who has been anxiously awaiting a title shot, and has also already beaten Frankie Edgar via unanimous decision when the two touched gloves back in 2008. Maynard has already been lighting up his Twitter account with talks of a championship bout with Edgar, and it will be interesting to see if UFC pulls the rug out from underneath Maynard to appease one of their biggest stars in Penn. Stay tuned for updates…
