...He has been jumping the 6 foot fence daily now. Usually, when I find him, he is happy to see me. This morning, he took off for several hours. Usually when I find him, he acts real happy to see me and jumps up and down...today, two construction workers had him in their truck...He saw me and dug his feet in the dirt and resisted going with me. Acted like I beat him or something. Ive never hit this dog. It was a bit embarrassing...Had to force him into my car...My feelings now is that if that's how he is going to be, I want to get rid of him...He has terrible separation anxiety and destroys my house if he is left alone..He has tied me down so as It is hard to even go out on a date without having to deal with him. Am I being overly sensitive to the fact that he acted like that toward me this morning? He even got loose and ran and jumped back in the truck with these guys...Like he was terrified of me...I am not one to endorse chaining a a dog to a tree, but I just may have no choice.
Thanks for letting me vent on this subject.

Its really bugging me that he acted so afraid of me. I have never mistreated this dog and have given him my life, damn near...If it weren't for that, I would be fine with having found him...but he dug his heels into the ground and I had to drag him to my car...yes, it was a little embarrassing..

hmm man i don't know what to tell you about this one. I could understand how this could be really embarrassing. I wish i had an answer as to why he is acting like that or why he freaks out so much. Sometimes it's just not a match made in heaven. Maybe you can find him a home with some people that have a couple kids that can really run him into the ground so he is more worn down. I don't know man sorry to hear about this i thought all was going well with him.

Is he not neutered? Why do you figure he jumps the fence?

^He's been neutered...and he humps every dog he meets.....There are 3 dogs down the road that he likes to go visit..He jumped the fence again this morning...I'm not sure what to do. I just keep him in the house now. If I leave him outside for a few minutes, he's gone...It sucks..he at least acted happy to see me when I found him this morning...arrggghhh!

well I have beaten both of my dogs in the beginning to set the pecking order and they mind me. You can always by a kennel with a lid, that will stop him getting away. The you can use the iether an electric fence- shock collar- pellet rifle to fix the rest

Maybe he wasnt neutered properly. Id get it checked. Also are you spending time with him?? He may be doing this for attention...but the other part sounds like a hormonal issue.

Post Re: Bout had it with this dog...

I had a mixed chow that used to do the same thing, bro. My dad even built a large cage for him but he'd only dig a hole to get out. I'm sorry to say that, despite my love for dogs and him, I used to lose my temper and whip him with a belt to get him back home. Sure, it worked at getting him home (sometimes faster than me) but I truly regret it now since it always set fear into him. Yet, he was a very loving and friendly dog. Well, I had moved out of my parents house for a while and one day, my mom called to give me double bad news. The first was that the dog got out one morning and my dad found him 2 blocks away dead in the streets. Apparently, he'd dug a hole in his cage and ran in unfamiliar territory because he was usually careful at crossing the streets. The 2nd news was that my dad was terminally ill with cancer. She even suggested that my dad may have accidentally hit the dog because my dad had lost most of his feelings in his left side and had the dog been hit on the left side of his truck, my dad wouldn't have known it.

So I'd suggest placing your dog in a shelter since he has escape issues. Maybe he can be trained or maybe not. But if he's not too big, he may be better as a house pet.

The dog is with me all the time. I cant leave the house without him. He has broken windows and jumped out...He goes nuts when he is alone...as long as Im home, hes ok. He is around people all day long...People love this dog. But this running away is just starting up again. He ran off again a few minutes ago...He had a shock collar on...I didnt know where he was. I gave a few warning beeps..He didnt show up...I kept dialing up the intensity and shocking...I finally just kept hitting level 15 shock and he came sprinting across the field for home...Im afraid he will get hit by a car...Ive seen him running down the middle of the street...do I just give him away and spare myself having to find him dead in the street?

man, it's obvious you love the dog, yet, imho, you're asking all the wrong questions to the wrong guys

all the time effort and energy and anxiety you spend on it, you need a professional trainers advice, there has gotta be some board like ours for that

      good luck

Well, it may sound like hes caused me a lot of anxiety, but overall, he's been excellent. It's just been these last two weeks that he started running down the road to play with these 3 dogs. wondering if one of them is in heat or something. The separation anxiety isnt too bad since I do take him to work every day, but sometimes I just need a break. I've had a few people tell me they would take him in a heartbeat. Just not sure now, after having him for 1.5 years, if I'm ready to part with him. (oops, sorry, didnt mean to make this pic so big)

I put him in a kennel last month for a weekend trip. Went to pick him up and asked the lady how he did. She said "pretty good, but he jumped the fence 3 times to come up front where the people are"...I asked her how many dogs jump the fence there...She says "well, Ive owned this kennel for 14 years and have only had 2 other dogs besides yours who jumped the fence"...Honestly, Ive seen some athletic dogs in my day, but this dude puts them all to shame. If I had the time, I would put him in agility training for competition
